Need Input - Shots

Hey all, was just curious if anyone had any good/ bad experiences with the Flu shot and lyme shot for dogs?

I have never given them, and have heard the lyme shot can have really bad side effects for shepherd breeds especially. Someone I know lost their Aussie a few days after getting the shot.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or input on these. I've always been of the belief that less is more, and the Flu vaccine for them I have only heard of in the last year... not to keen on doping the pups up if they really dont need it!

If they are on Heart Worm medicine, I'd think you can stay away from the Lymes injection. I do get the Flu injection for my dogs, only because one of them got the Flu one year, and almost died from it. We have a lot of Fox running around here. Like ICit says, stick to the basics unless your Dog gets Boarded.

I sure you already know to stay away from Heatworm meds with Ivermectin.. :yay:

and out of ALL MY YEARS at the ER vet.... I have never seen a K9 Flu case.. I have seen many Kennel Cough cased that had turned really bad to the point of admitting them.

My crew had it soooo bad that I almost had to admit two of mine and all the other Techs dogs had it as well. My one coworker had to admit two of hers.

Stay away from Ivermectin. Why? Isn't that what is usually prescribed by vets??

Certain breeds should not take it as they have a sensitivity to it and could kill them.

Dogs that are Sensitive to Ivermectin
Breeds of dogs that display a genetic sensitivity to Ivermectin are collies, Shetland sheepdogs, English sheepdogs and Australian sheepdogs. These breeds have a different blood-brain barrier than other breeds of dogs and display a susceptibility to intoxication caused by Ivermectin. These dogs can take a period of months to recover from this intoxication.

Ivermectin in Heartworm Prevention Medicines for Collie Breeds - Safety with the MDR1 Gene Mutation

low dosage could be safe.... but why take the chance??? There are many other Heatworm treatments to use.

I will never give my small dog Ivermec again as there is a link between her auto immune disease and Ivermec. So we use revolution :yay:

Our yellow lab (now deceased) was a very loving friendly dog. She had the nasal form of bordatella and freaked out. She remained a very loving dog, except in the exam room when a vet tech would come near her Even after we switched vets. She was fine in the waiting room, but we'd have to muzzle her in the exam room. As soon as a vet tech would approach her, she'd lunge to bite.
