Need recommendations for a kennel

So, the wife and I are going out of town for 3 days and 2 nights for our 10 year anniversary and the Grand parents are watching out 3 kids, but we also have two dogs: a yorkie mix (2 yrs), and a dalmatian mix (10 yrs).

I need to know a good place to board my dogs in St. Mary's while we are gone.

Recommendations?

I adore these people - absolutely adore them
Indian Bridge Kennels and Suites, Inc. offers Southern MD dog care options
Their website isn't as nice as some of the other area kennel websites but go for a drop in visit/tour. You will be impressed.

I visited a lot of kennels in St Mary's and did unannounced drop-ins and requested a tour and that's how I wound up with Indian Bridge. I suggest you do the same. I discovered a lot of shady stuff IMHO by doing an unannounced visit.

Oh and you can also have your dogs "share a room" so they won't be lonely. Nice sized rooms - should be plenty of room for them both.

We take our dog to Farmstead Kennels. He is given a lot of attention and is supervised for outside play with the other dogs. He truly understands animals and pairs them off with appropriate playmates. My sister had recommended them. Now everyone in our family uses these facilities. His website is farmsteadkennels.com.

I recommend Chessie Pets.

Farmstead Kennels is great. We take our two labs there. They have tiled floors and walls and sliding glass doorsfor the kennels. Way better than others with cement floors and chain link fences?

Looking too

I've also been searching and have looked at all of the previous threads on here. I stopped by Farmstead yesterday but they were closed prior to their 5:30 p.m. posted closing time. Makes me nervous that they aren't there when they should be. I saw a dog boarded in a kennel, but the building was dark inside. Anyone know if they check on the dogs periodically when their office is closed?

Photo - I stopped by Kiarry on Tuesday and they seemed a bit run down.
you would recommend them, though? I have a Foxhound so I thought it was interesting that they breed the hounds. I am hoping that since they are breeders they would be attentive to the dogs. What happens if they have a dog show trip scheduled when you are boarding your dog there? Does the daughter stay behind to run the kennel?

I see a lot of threads say Chesapeake books quickly and quite often - haven't stopped by there yet. Also hoping to stop by Countryside Pet Paradise, Applejack K-9, and Riviera.

That's exactly why I say to do drop ins. I found a lot of places that had been recommended to me that didn't meet my personal requirements that way. One place advertisied air conditioned kennels. When I did my drop in, it was sweltering hot, no a/c going with a couple of fans running. The dogs looked absolutely miserable and were crying and panting. it was heartbreaking. One dog was getting picked up and his owner was like "Oh he so loves it here - see how happy he is". I think the dog was just happy as heck to escape that prison. Good for you for taking the boarding responsibility seriously.

(also don't forget to check out Indian Bridge)

Thanks, migtig. I would definitely check out Indian Bridge because I've seen several recommendations on here for them. I'm in Mechanicsville, so if none of the closer ones meet my standards, they will be next. Of course, I'd make the extra drive if it means my pup will be well cared for.

Photo - you have no issues with Kiarry? I thought they looked a bit run down, but they take good care of your dog it seems? What if they have a dog show to attend while your dog is there?

To Chellelynn Regarding Farmstead Kennels

Chellelynn,

I am an employee at farmstead kennels and I was sad to hear you stop by and no one was there prior to our 5:30 closing. And that you didn't see any lights on that made you feel uncomfortable about if the pets were checked on periodical. I just wanted to clear things up for you and apologize. On the day you had stop by John(the owner) and I had an emergency to tend to regarding our family and we could not get any coverage in the time we had to work with. This is why we had to close early and I'm sorry if there was any inconvenience to you. We live on the premises and were back at 6:30 to tend to our guest and for them to go outside. We are always there during the day and after hours. We do have timers on our lights so we can keep our guest company in the evening time. That is probably why the it seem dark inside I just wanted to clear that up for you. You are more than welcome to come back by and take a look at our facility. I am very sorry for any inconvenience.

Thanks
Laura

We've used a few of the kennels mentioned here and found Pet Paradise on RT4 (43450 Saint Andrews Church Rd , Leonardtown, Maryland. (301) 475-2142) to be the best one for our dog. They just remodeled and have updated the facilities and runs. The owner has been in the kennel business for years. Always ask to see the premises before you decide.

Don't put all your eggs in fresh paint and manicured lawns...

I have a good friend who owns a kennel in TX. They charge low rates, and are very affordable. They also can't afford to be lookin' ritzy as a result. Yet, every day the Mrs boils chickens and puts meat and broth w/ the dog food unless the owners request not, they spend gobs of time with the dogs, and keep the place impeccably clean if a bit run down. I know TX is far away, LOL, but my point is, appearances can fool you easily.

Smell is actually more important :)

Check out Southern Maryland Association of Professional Pet Sitters at Southern Maryland Association of Professional Pet Sitters , although Pet Sitting is actually coming into the client's home and providing care, some of the business also board pets in their homes.
