Never used Avast, AVG has always worked so well for me and my friends that we just never had the desire to try any other.

Ok, so would you go as far as purchasing this software?

Oh and thanks Chess, but I don't think I have ever heard of that before. I might have to do some research! :howdy:

I use the free version. The differences between the free and paid is basically the availability of support. Check out the diffs here:
AVG Free Advisor - AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
They also have a free spyware product that works well, but I found it sucks up too much system resource for me.

Here's my thing:

I have tried 3 different security suites and I am still being slammed with spyware constantly.

I have reformatted this hard drive so many times because of the piss poor protection I am getting from these so called security suites.

I am about to recieve a bigger hard drive because this one is so freakin full it ain't funny. So I don't want to have to reinstall all this shtuff again!

I REALLY REALLY want the best that's out there and I want the complete package so I don't have to deal with forty million different software applications.

So that is why I am asking, would you or would you not invest in the AVG suite?

Based on that, I'm thinking there may be other issues. You may have re-installed XP, but have you downloaded all of the security patches? Do you have automatic update turned on? What are you using for a firewall? Cable, DSL or Satellite? Do you scan your personal data BEFORE you put it back onto the C: drive after a hit? It sounds like you have more that might need to be addressed than just anti-virus and spyware.

I've been running with just AVG Free for about 4 years, and only got hit recently, but the hit I got would not have been deterred by most protections. As of this weekend, I'm still running AVG Free with Comodo firewall, Win XP firewall turned on, and the DSL router firewall turned on.

So, to answer your question directly, NO, I personally would not invest, because I don't have a need.

I don't like suites. IMHO they take up tooo much space (large foot print).

I have been running the following for years and haven't had any problems.

1. Grisoft AVG (Virus)
2. ZoneAlarm Pro (Firewall and Anti-SpyWare)
3. CounterSpy (Anti-SpyWare).

Also...

1. I absolutely don't open any messages sent from unknown senders and I don't open any Executables attached to mail messages.

2. I have Microsoft Outlook Express set to only display messages in Text Format. In otherwords - I don't allow graphics, executables, etc. from opening automatically.

I also run FireFox (not Microsoft Explorer).

Hope this helps...

I switched to ThunderBird and FireFox. Safer....

I love FireFox. I tried moving over to ThunderBird but it couldn't handle all my different e-mail addresses. Well, that may be misleading - I wanted to move everything (automated) over from Express to ThurnderBird but couldn't find a routine that actually worked. I may still move over when I feel like doing it manually.

I'm glad. Keeping the patches up-to-date is as, if not more, important than the security software. Moving away from Microsoft products is always a good move too.
