Need some advice

We adopted a female beagle from a rescue organization 2 mos ago. She is around 4 years old. The foster Mom told us that she was house trained but this is not exactly true. We've been crating her and clsely supervising her when she is out. She's been doing pretty good with this arrangement but has urinated on the carpet twice in the past two days after coming back in the house. My husband takes her out every 30 minutes when he comes home until we see her pee. Yesterday and today, he let her out several times and she didn't do anything and when he brought her in she pee'd when his back was turned. It's like she waits till she comes in. We want to keep her but am trying to get her to understand she can only pee outside. We thoroughly clean, dry and deoderize the spots. When she pees outside we praise her lavishly and keep her limited to a specific area of the house. I don't know much about her history just that she was rescued from a shelter in N.C. She gets tons of attention and affection and is a pretty good dog except for this problem. I have noticed that she is a very doggy dog, she didn't know basic commands like sit, etc so I'm thinking she might have bee a
member of a hunting pack. Does anyone know of a creative way to train tough cases?

Could she have an infection?

Keep her with you at all times that she is not crated..on a leash. As soon as you see her squatting, give her a firm NO! and get her outside quickly. Good to have a treat handy and praise her immediately upon pottying and give her a treat.

The idea is not to let her make a mistake.

^ yep, that is the advertisement that showed up under this thread. :eyebrow:

A friend of mine puts down some puppy pads in the house and keeps moving them towards the door, eventually putting the pad outside the door. She's been very successful.

All that does is teach them it's okay to potty in the house.

:yeahthat: That's a great way to make sure she can't do something while your back is turned. You can hook the leash to your belt loop so you don't have to hold it all the time.

I did this when we had our foster boxer and it worked great!

She's been very successful with her method, however, she's only done this with puppies, not 4 year old dogs. And now that I have read this posting again, I have a question. Has she only done this the past 2-days during the nearly 2-months she has been in your home?

Another thing you need to do is figure out a way that she can communicate with you that she needs to go out. Maybe a bell? Or as you are going out, use something like "go potty" or "go outside" so she learns that going outside will get him to the potty and she can head toward the door.

Mine are bell trained.

She pee'd in the house within a day or so of us getting her. That's why we started confining her. We closed the parts of the house off where she made her boo boos and have kept her confined to the main living area and also keep her crate in there. now she's pee'd in that room right by the back door. We can keep her from making a mistake for a week or so at a time, but just when you think she's getting the hang of it she pees in the house. We;ve had her checked out and she's been declared healthy.

She will often go to the door and seems to want to go out. We always let her out and a lot of times she will go out on the deck and no further and then ask to come back in. So I'm pretty sure she knows that going to the door gets her a trip outside, what she doesn't seem to get is that she cannot pee inside - she thinks it's ok.

Are you taking her all the way out into the yard and seeing that she does her business? Then praising her? Consistency is key and keep it up for a few months, not just a week at a time.

Actually we do. A lot of times though she will run back up to the door to go back in after spending considerable time in the yard but not peeing. My working theory is that she goes out and becomes so distracted by activities in the neighborhood, that she forgets to pee. What worries me most is that we won't ever be able to trust her and will have to crate her the rest of her life. I'm going to get my husband to try the leash indoors trick since he gets home first.

you might want to try taking the dog out on a leash and walking her around til she pees. We had to do that with our dog when she was a puppy. we also had to take her out in the middle of the night too (but your dog is older so you don't have to do that). I take the dog out and say to her go potty and she usually sniffs around til the right spot is found then she pees which sometimes takes her over 10min min to do and the same with poop (but she is like clockwork with that (she goes in the morning right after she eats breakfast and sometimes in the middle of the day but doesn't go again til after she eats the next am). The dog is good she lets me know she has to pee by whining and then once i get up t0 get my shoes on and coat and take her out as the fenced in area we have doesn't come up to the door she starts tugging on my shirt til i get her leash on her and get her out the door so can do her business.

I have the dog on a potty schedule too. she goes out first thing in the morning then she comes back in and relaxes for a little then I feed her breakfast (I give her 20min and if she doesn't eat it gets picked up til the next am. Then when she is done eating I take her out again and she most of the time pees again and then goes poop. Then she is in til about 1pm then I take her out again one last time before I head to work downstairs. Then my I come back and get her about 145 or 2pm and she hangs with us til about 230 or so then she goes out and potties again as during the day she drinks alot of water. Then she is in til about 430 or so then she goes out again. Then I take her out one last time between 645 and 830 and then she is in for the night til the next morning between 630 and 7am or sometimes later it depends on when the last time she was out the night before was.

I think I am doing something wrong  I feed my dogs twice a day. I would never expect my dogs to hold their poop for 20 hours.
Maybe she had been yelled at for going to b/r in the her previous yard and they trained her to go in a neighbors yard and she is trying to please you by going in the house. The foster probably didn't lie to you, it is possible that your dog was in a house with other dogs and she followed the pack and did what they did.
You have to catch her doing good and praise her, and praise her some more. Let her think that she is the smartest dog ever, have a treat handy as a reward. It will take some patience but sometimes you just have to try & figure out their little quirks and what works best with them.

have you tried a canine diaper...most adult dogs will not pee with it on..then take it off when you take her out to pee ..then put it back on inside till she gets the hang of it...at least you do not have to clean up any pee

Since she's a beagle, I'd do what jp suggested and walk her on a leash, and walk her to the same exact spot every time you take her out. That way she won't get distracted by smells and other stuff in the yard. She'll get the hang of it.
