network/router techs

Home, and my granddaughters boyfriend hooked it up a couple of years ago. Got a new desktop at Christmas and let Dell take over remotely and now the router says we have 2 networks and laptop and ipad don't want to connect. Boyfriend is no longer in picture. Someone that knew what they were doing could probably fix it in a few minutes but I don't happen to be that person.

In My Opinion
type this into your internet search bar

It should open up a connection with your router, if you have never been into it it might ask for a password, try "admin" or "password" it will then ask that you create a new password.

Make sure that the router is set to allow the extra connections (it is pretty easy to navigate and figure this out once you are in )

If your router is really broadcasting 2 networks it has to be dual-channel capable. What is the router's make and model? By providing this I can tell you if the router is dual-channel and what the default password is to login to your router. To access your router you simply type in the IP address of it in your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc). To determine it's IP address click the Start button, All Programs, Accessories, then Command Prompt. Type in ipconfig and press Enter. Look for the line that says Default Gateway, this is the IP address of the router.

If it is not dual-channel then it is not able to broadcast 2 networks at the same time and the problem lies somewhere else. For example, the iPad and laptop may have the old network saved on them but it may not even exist anymore.

Cisco-Valet Wireless Router, my husbands desktop, itouch and ipad are connect to one network and it says My new desktop is on Network 1 and the laptop won't connect to anything! Thinking about calling Integrated Systems Solutions tomorrow, are they any good? I am too old to be banging my head on walls

The Cisco Valet M10 Wireless Router is not dual-channel capable so it should not be broadcasting two different networks. In order to get the devices that aren't connected to the network, they will need to connect to whichever network your working desktop PC is connecting to.

This does sound like an easily solvable issue, but in your situation, one that can be fixed more quickly and easily by someone actually being there rather than someone trying to walk you thru things to check and try.

Here is a couple of businesses in SoMD that do residential services, not sure which one is better than the other.

Agree with CooleyGirl, the cisco valet wireless is not a dual channel router.

Thank you guys so Much! I know that the MAC address to the old desktop is still there and then dell went in and did something and the next thing you know it's saying there are 2 networks and the hp printer that work on old computer wouldn't on new one and had to wire it. See why somebody that is clueless could have problems. lol. Thanks for the business information, I will call both tomorrow and see what they say.

Maybe you can hook up with each other via teamviewer.com since it sounds like cooley knows what she's doing. Just a thought. Pay via a bottle of wine.

I have used this with my folks and it works great, both of you just run the program, the one who is wanting help gives the helper the ID/Password and wala, instant screenshare. It is a little fuzzy but does the trick!
