Ok everyone, I got another puppy. Akc black lab 3 1/2 months old. His name is trooper, Reason is, he has a broken hip. Hair line fractures 3 in the growth plate. He was bread by my two cop buddies dogs. 1 yellow female and a black english male. I was on my way home last night and called my friend who has the puppies, He also has a 65 gt mustang i'm buying. Anyhow i was talking to him and he said the puppy fell of a 2' step and landed on his tail end. He said the pup was limping around, So his girlfriend took him to the vet and was told he had to replace the entire hip. The bill was gonna be almost $2000.00 He said he might have to put the pup down. Anyhow i told him let me know the cost, Because i would pay for the cast and anything else up to $300.00. I didn't want to see this little guy put down. So his g/f went back and the vet explained it could heal by it's self. I told him i would take the puppy and i would be able to put the puppy somewhere in my home so it would heal and live a happy life. So i gave him $1 for the puppy and i took him home. Now my question, Anyone that has had any vet experience or just someone who has a ton of animals, Will the pup be ok? He walks a little sideways and it's a little hard for him to pick himself up off the floor, But he wants to play and act crazy with my other dog. Any help anyone can give me would be awesome. Or even say a prayer that the little guy heals just fine.

It could possibly heal, however, left untreated it could cause him severe problems in the future. Make a call to your vet and get him seen asap. The poor guy shouldn't suffer.

Should have named him HS.
congratulations on the new pup. A hairline fracture should heal in a few weeks. I think I'd use a different vet than the one that wanted to do a replacement. Wouldn't it have to be done again as the dog grew?

FDD, if I were you I'd take him to a vet you can trust and have him examined anyway; he should get all his shots and heartworm treatments and the like, in addition to having the vet examine the hip and give a prognosis. We use the one on Airport View Drive and have no complaints at all.

he has had all his shots up to date, I will be taking him to my vet. The vet gave her some pain meds to keep him calm. He also said it should heal fine. I'll be taking him later this week along with my other dog to my vet. My other dog needs a check up.

FD, I don't know what vet you go to but I have taking my dogs to Tidewater for having their ears cut on. I love them and would go there for all but its a long drive for me to go there just for shots/anything else. They vet's are great and have never heard anything or anyone say anything bad about them. Just to give you something to think about.

I've always heard the younger they are, the quicker they will heal. I would think they might have to split it, but let the vet check him out, I'm sure they will tell you. Stay with a local vet like Tidewater.

I'm betting he will heal fine, my only thought would be he is more likely to develop problems as he ages....

Good on ya J...

Tidewater or Three Notch for sure! I admire your taking on the task and giving the pup a home and a chance at life!! Hard to keep a pup from wanting to play. Will he be crated and given other things to occupy his mind and spirit while he's on the mend? Maybe the vet would consider splinting for reinforcement  (I think Kizzy mentioned it), so that the healing doesn't occur "screwy" for lack of a better term. I, too, find it hard to believe that a replacement would even be considered.
