New at AES

This year 2 of the 5th grade classes will be 1 gender. An all boys class and an all girls class. What is everyone's opinion on this?

I am still really not sure how I would feel if my son was selected to be in the all boys class.

Oh how interesting! I do know that boys and girls at that age learn best using totally different teaching methods... their brains are wired differently. IF that is the point of the segregation... than your boy will most likely benefit from it.

I am not sure if he was selected yet. A post card will be sent next week. They sent a general letter informing the parents of the changes in teachers and what will be happening with 2 classes. I called to ask how they were making selections but the principal is out for a few days.

I don't know how I'd feel about that, other than being thankful I am NOT a teacher that would have to spend 8 hours locked in a room with 35, 10 year old boys! :faint:

My undergrad degree is in psychology....interestingly we talked about this in many of my classes...after researching this here is my theory... Boys and girls ought to be in the same classroom and are definitely able learn together...however.. many years ago it was decided that there was a bias against girls in education, as evidenced by the fact that there were less in universities and they were not performing as well in certain tests...in an effort to "even up" education there were many pieces of legislation passed.. this, after many years, has swung in the other direction and boys are paying for it...and many believe that this "feminization of education" has had farther reaching consequences than education.

Here is a good article that gives a good primer as to what I am talking about
Concerned Women for America - Feminizing the Nation's Boys

this site may be a little biased...but all you have to do is google "the feminization of boys in education" You will get a ton of hits.

here is a funny article about real life stories
How the Schools Shortchange Boys by Gerry Garibaldi, City Journal Summer 2006

I love being able to discuss this..i did many papers on it...interesting topic!

Now I think this is an interesting experiment for a school to do...If there is any difference, I am willing to be it is positive.

Just curious...why would you not be thrilled about this? I'd think that it would benefit him. One for the reason that the smart lady above me (kwillia)stated about the learning difference between the genders. And two because without girls in the classroom the boys may focus more on the teacher and their lessons.

I think we should separate whites and coloreds too!
