New Brake Pads

Hi,

I just replaced all brake pads on my 2005 Hyundai Tucson. Ever since then when braking, especially noticeable after about 20 miles of driving they make a loud screeching noise when I apply the brake pedal. Original mechanic said they can't hear it (I'm not imagining it) and re-checked the brakes said everything was fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Per Google search: A squealing noise can be caused by: worn brake pads/shoes; wrong brake pads/shoes; improper rotor finish; lack of lubrication; brake dust between the caliper and pad; worn hardware; and/or fatigued brake shoe hold-down springs.

Thanks! I've been looking at google but am rather frustrated. The mechanic says there is nothing wrong, it's been back since they did the brake pads so it's basically my word against theirs. I'm sure they don't squeal for no reason.

What brand brake pads did they use, OEM? Also did they turn the rotors or replace them?

sorry forgot to say that mechanic said replacing or turning rotors wasn't needed at this time if we didn't want to pay for it.

With 50k, you should of at least turn them when replacing the pads. I doubt they used oem pads if it wasn't done at the dealership and they didn't even turn the rotors...

Organic or non-organic brake pads? Also.....you might want to try placing a light grit sandpaper on a flat surface and scuff the new pads to break the glaze before installing them. That might prevent future squeaks. Also make sure your rotors are true and that they don't have any oil on them before you re-mount the caliper.

This poor girl got snowed by a blinker fluid comment. You really think she can do anything you suggested?

In My Opinion
resurface the rotors.
next, a hard to find squeeling in the brakes can be the contact point between the back of the pad and the piston.
clean the edge of the piston where it contacts the pad. I have gone as far as to rub a little WD-40 (dont get it on the rotor or pad contact side) on the piston.
Sometimes when the brakes have just been replaced it takes a little while for the piston to make full solid contact with the pad and its just enough for the pad to vibrate and cause the sound from the metal to metal contact.

On all my vehicles (other than my 91 Buick), i have put anywhere from 20k-80k miles on them and never turned or replaced the rotors. If you replace the pads before they wear out the rotors should be fine. Now if you have uneven wear, or can see groves in the rotor then i would say do it.

On the buick however that thing ate through rotors faster than it did pads. Had one go till i heard the grinding. Did that for a day, and when i took of the rotor you could see the air channels on the inside.

Yes i do measure my rotors to make sure they are within limits.

He sounds honest. Most shops will turn rotors for no good reason except for making them more money. Using the original manufacturers pads will give you the results you want but it won't be cheap.
