New Brakes

So, after 100,000 miles, it's finally time to replace the original rotors and pads on the 2014 GMC 1500. Never really impressed with the stopping power of the originals, so looking to replace with something a bit beefier, but not looking to swap out the calipers. Looking for suggestions on new rotors and pads.

Got these for the sons 135i last year. They are pretty damn good. Not sure if they make a kit for your truck though.

One huge thing though, do read the instructions. Dummy me knows you gotta remove the protective coating, which with these became a hige friken mess. Stuff was thick and took two cans to clean one rotor.........

Well, if you read the instructions, that coating is NOT to be removed.

Also, I have an ODB SuperChips analyzer/programmer model 2715 that fits a GMC truck 1996-2003 from 4.8 to 8.1 liter. I used it to flash the chip on my GMC 2000 1500, but if I remember right, never re-flashed to OEM. Probably means the programmer is VIN-locked to the old truck, which I no longer have. It may be usable as a code reader only.

Free.

I upgraded my 2005 Town and Country and my 2003 Aviator to EBC Pads

A lot of Slingshot riders use EBCs.

Rock Auto has caliper and pad kits, Coated Power Stop.
I was just reading a "best list" and PowerStop is on the top of the list.

The Jeep 75,000 mi brake refresh featured those and I wasn't quite happy with them. Less than 50k later they were making all sorts of noise.
Noise with age was a very common complaint of nearly all the brands.

Well for Sneaker's vehicle there are probably about 20 or 30 options in the Rotor and Pad Kits.

Saw this on the way into Ace this morning. Someone's going to have an interesting ride home.

I've gotten hooked on youtube vids from a tech down in Florida. He recently worked on a car that was so severely rusted that all 4 brake sets were frozen solid.

And another bunch of youtubes with "Customer States" in the title, various authors. The condition of some wheels makes you afraid to drive, knowing just how badly some people maintain their car.

Thanx for the Rock Auto reminder. Would have liked coated for rust prevention, but I really don't have a problem with rust as it's garaged, and opted for a heavy duty/tow drilled/slotted set from PowerStop. Should be here middle of next week.

I used the EBCs on the motorcycle.

I did like the Powerstops, and maybe if your brakes only last 30-40K its not an issue. But I hate noisy brakes, and these got super noisy. We'll see, the Raybestos are right about 25k now.

I'm not hard on my brakes, 100,000 miles on the originals. We'll see as they age. A little brake cleen every so often to keep dust down might help.

Id say 100K is pretty easy on them. I'm usually good for 75k, but I think the average is far lower than that. Of course, when you combine numbnuts driving with mechanics recommending a change when it might not be needed and ignorant customers just saying "Do it" I can see where the average is 40k.

Got the shipment from Rock Auto today, early enough to get started, so did the fronts. Pretty uneventful. I did make one rookie mistake (It's my first day on the job.... :duh: ). Got the passenger side completed, tire back on, working on the driver's side. Putting the rotor on, and noticed a little tiny sticker...

"Front Passenger Side"

Aw hell. Had to disassemble the "completed" passenger side just to swap the rotors. Got everything back together and took it out to burnish the pads. Felt good, no pull, even stops.

On the "I have a question" side of this....
One of the main reasons I was replacing everything was because last week the mechanic who did the front struts said I had less than 4mm of pad left, and I had no reason to doubt him with 100k miles on this set. Pulled them off, and they have more meat than a cheapo brand. Not less than 7mm on any pad. And the rotors looked terrific, no scarring, even wear, a good candidate for turning. so why did the mechanic say I was down to 3-4mm? Other than the obvious, he wanted to do a full brake job. But this was not an outfit that I would think would pull a fast one. Puzzled...

Anyway, one side was hanging up a little, so they did need servicing, but I could have cleaned everything, put it all back together and gone another 50-70k miles with no worries.

Rears another day. Probably the last time I'll do something like this.... getting too old and sore to sit on the ground. Really need a lift.

Would you have replaced these pads?

So you are the One I always see running the red lights - trying to get 200k out of those pads!
