I just got a Dell, and love it.

BUT, DO NOT USE DELL FINANCIAL SERVICES. Bad experience there, and I have not heard anything good about them. 3 other folks in my office also had bad dealings with them and the forums on the Dell website is LOADED with DAILY complaints about trouble with DFS.

:yeahthat: about DFS, forum is all about how badly they suck.

If you order from Dell, do it online, don't call the 800 line. I knew what I wanted and called, got a guy that couldn't speak engrish and had to try to take my order via his script. I hung up on him and did it online in 5 minutes.

Get the biggest monitor you can afford - flat screens are awesome. Get a good graphics card. Don't skimp on memory. A CD burner is a must - DVD player is nice.

:yeahthat: 17 inch flatscreen, at a minimum. Go for broke with the memory.

I would go for a Gateway. I do purchasing for my business and we went with Gateway's this year. Cheaper than Dell's and you get more for your buck. I would make sure I have a 64 bit AMD processor, 1 GB of memory, 128MB pci express video card, at least an 80 GB hard drive, dvd dual layer burner, and a 17" flat panel monitor.
