How is it possible to have problems with a month old laptop? We purchased this new Dell from Best Buy and it's a NIGHTMARE. I'm running Norton Anti-Virus and it runs all scans with NO problems, but I cannot keep my IE from (NOT RESPONDING)...at a minimum of 10 times in a 3 hour period? I don't get it... I went to microsoft and it's asking if I"ve updated...WHICH I HAVE... and it MUST be a virus or something because when I search for things on BING.. and go to click on what I've found...it's a damn advertisement of some sort???? I HAVE NO IDEA?? and I called DELL and they don't want to offer any help because I bought from Best Buy... and Geek Squad... yeah, they aren't wanting to try and fix anything they can't recreate the FIRST time they log on to it?????????????
Any Ideas???

I have a new Dell Inspiron (two months old) and mine does the same thing although not as frequently as you are describing. When it happens to me, I just close all the windows in IE and then re-open it. I've found that it seems to happen more frequently if I have a lot of windows open at the same time.

As a last resort, you might want to download Firefox (you should probably do Firefox or Google Chrome as a back-up internet access system anyway), uninstall and then re-install Internet Explorer to try to address the problem. Before you do that however, wait & see what some of the other guys are saying in response to your thread. There are a bunch of folks with super solid computer/tech experience who may suggest other more palatable options.

Good luck!!

If you continously get different sites....

..other than the one you entered, you may have a REDIRECT VIRUS. This one sends you to different sites (other than the one you typed in), and works especially well when using links.

Good luck, I had to get a pro to remove it from my desktop. If you want someone local (Hollywood area) who can perform the removal (other than Geek Squad), and at a reasonable cost, PM me.

There is probably more to your problem than you have described. I have the same problem and haven't found a real solution yet. The problem probably occurs when you hit a page with Adobe Flash embedded in it. The problem isn't with Windows 7 or IE 8. I just stumbled on this page today, maybe it will help you:

Flash Player on 64-bit operating systems

Had the same type of problem a couple if years ago with a Dell with Norton, I was told by someone( dont remember who), That norton takes a lot of memory and runs at all times constantly scanning files and folders. If you do not have a lot of memory, I can bet with a unit from best buy you may not have the best set-up, It would really slow down.
I uninstalled Norton and went with AVG and have not had any problems.

Just a thought....

Yes 64 bit browsers do not always work even with school websites. Norton is very intrusive, get AVG antivirus Also get Google Chrome or Firefox as a browser instead of IE.

May not be the Norton as I have the same problem (on a smaller scale) and I have macafee... and I have a 3.00 GB RAM installed.

Thanks for this link -- it may explain another problem that I've been having accessing something for school remotely. Checking into this to try to solve that problem.

Okay, downloaded Google Chrome, it too locks up and freezes and I've got the blue screen/memory dump restart twice in less than 10 minutes :-(. Gonna try and turn off the Norton and see if that has any effects...

Also check C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.txt and make sure the only entry that is not 'marked out' is 127.0.0.1

Goto to IE's 'tools-internet options-connections-lan settings and make sure there is nothing entered for a proxy, and that use proxy is not checked.

For scanning and removal of malware / spyware malwarebytes (malwarebytes.org) is a peach, and free- much better than Norton at removing malware. If you have malware redirecting you you may need to boot into safe mode w/ networking to download, install, and update it. It'll find pretty much any malware on your PC and remove it, I've very seldom had to resort to other methods like manual removal.

It's also possible settings or services get snafu'd. Any chance anyone poked around disabling services trying to speed up the laptop? Or, if you had Norton remove an 'infection', sometimes it'll jack system files, and hose you up.

Good luck!

Been dealing with a friends PC cause the Dell can not connect to the Norton server to activate it....Cant run spybot, can not access server, can not activate Mocrosoft office....same reason.
Told to ditch Norton and download "Avast"....avast! - Download Free Antivirus Software or Internet Security
Norton is too invasive and too easy to get by with a smart hacker/virus builder.

You may be on to something, because I've tried to run Google Chrome, nope, I've downloaded firefox, same problems, cannot run spybot, cannot run ANYTHING and I have NO idea what's going on...I THINK I've got some sort of virus and Norton is blocking my abilities to fix anything...if that's possible?? I'm going to try and uninstall NORTON and try something else... I've done what Turbo suggested too and got nothing???? still trying

I did read about a virus that block all other anti-viruses programs from talking to their home server.
I was also getting a lot of Not Responding messages on simple stuff.
Very frustrating,,esp since dell has been so stable,
But Comcast is giving away Norton, so I think it was hacked and a nasty bug got into the womans PC.
My next option is to whipe the HD and install a clean copy of Win XP.......and install Avast.
Good Luck!!!!

I've used AVG (anti-virus), Zone Alarm (firewall) and CCleaner [all FREE] on every computer I've owned since before 2000. They have worked more than fine for me. In addition, I've used SpyBot and MalwareBytes.

There's your problem right there. Their computers come loaded with all kinds of bloatware that does who knows what.

I would ditch norton for avast, used it for a long time with great results, and zone alarm or comodo.
