New Guinea Impatiens

One of my NG Impatiens has started to shrivel. I can't figure out if it's had too much water from the recent rains, or if it hasn't had enough. Any ideas? Should I give it some more water and leave it be for a few days??

Could be too much water. How about too much sun?? They do better out of direct sun light.

They're in partial sun. One out of the four seems to be doing fine. I went ahead and gave them some water. I hope I don't drown the things!

Those little critters seem to like water, sometimes everyday depending how hot it is, I have some in planters some in the sun, some partial sun all or doing good so far this year. Maybe one way you can tell when they need water they shrivel up after you give them some water it only takes a very short period of time and they spring right back, if that one of yours that looks sick doesnt spring back it might be nearing its final resting place in plant heaven. :killingme

I just planted them a few weeks ago! :jameo:

I'm new to this flower/gardening business. What exactly do you mean by root problem?

...think of plants as having threee things to be concerned with in terms of problems;

Up, down and all around.

In this case, up is the foliage and yours is drooping, right? Like it's under watered?

But it's not under watered. In fact your concern is that it is over watered from all the rain and I'll bet you are correct. People's first impressions are correct 90% of the time. It's your plant, your yard and you know what's going on, what you've done with it.

So, down, the roots. NG's do love water and can, typically, when it's hot, be watered every day with no ill effects. What the ydon't like is being wet AND cool, which it's been of late.

I suspect that the coolnesss and excess water have lead the roots on this particular plant to, in essence, suffocate. Rain and more rain and no warm weather to dry things out and keep the healthy transpiration process rolling along. Maybe the drainage for this one plant is a bit slower than the others? The soil just a bit mor clay than the others? Maybe it sits a bit lower and the water pooled around it a bit longer? Good drainage, both in the soil (lose, not to compact, 'breathable') and having the plant sitting in a fashion where it isn't sitting in a low spot and water collects can be looked at.

If this is the case, then, once the roots start drowning, they become vulerable to nature in the form of all the molds and root diseases that, like a common cold for us, always there, ready to pounce and only affect you when you are tired or worn down or not eating right.

Got the reciept? Most places will replace it, especially Home Depot.

Give it a look as to why you think it may be suffering, how it's planted, etc.

Up; The folaige
Down; the roots
All around; the flowers

I'm guessing a root problem from cool and water accentuated by not so good drainage on this one plant or pooling around it that didn'ty happen to the others...or maybe your dog pizzed on it?

You know, I know Larry knows way more than I do on this, but I always found New Guinea Impatiens to be THE guy's plant, because they're almost impossible to kill. I've had them as hanging plants in my last two houses, and when they've wilted to the point that they look way past retrieval - poof, a little water and they are right back again. When people ask how much water, my usual answer is "until it pees". Most of the time, you can't overwater them.

Now - for ME - it's begonias and geraniums I can never find the right amount of water, for. Each seems to need it sparingly, and I never get it right.

Thanks for the info guys (I find it funny that only men replied to this thread ). I went ahead and gave them a little water and they did seem to perk up a bit, but not completely. I guess they require more water than I thought. I'm going to keep a close eye on them because they're such pretty plants. I don't want them to die!

I just got home and checked on them. They perked back up! Some of the blooms have fallen off, but it looks healthier now!

..so this is a false alarm? I thought all were fine save for one plant?

Well, good then.

It was actually three out of the four that were looking pitiful. Hopefully, they'll hang in there for me. Thanks for the info! :yay:
