New in town

I am new in town and wanted to join to talk to other dog lovers, breeders, and owners. I am a small chihuahua breeder who has been breeding dogs for over 20 years with my family. I have 6 adults who all sleep with me and are the most spoiled babies you will ever know.

I also have one puppy available from a litter of three. He is 9 weeks old and the cutest chihuahua. I am going to post his picture here. I am looking to sell him locally for a reasonable price so that I can watch him grow up. He's CKC registered and cream and white short coat. Very small and short cobby body. He should only be about 4lbs full grown.

Why CKC registered?

Welcome! I have an 11 year old chi that weighs in at 2 and 1/2 pounds. Wish I could get another but, she is way to used to being the center of attention. I own the used bookstore in Leonardtown. Stop by with your chi sometime.

This litter the mom and dad were CKC registered, but I normally do AKC puppies. The mom is 7lbs full grown and since she was out of AKC breed standard I chose to only CKC register her. But she has had 1 or 2 smaller puppies in each litter. However, once you CKC register a dog and you don't AKC them, you can't register the litter with AKC.

No, I don't post in the newspapers. I post on my website and some local web spaces. Then I go through an interview process. I prefer to post where other people have a common interest.

SOMD Classified is the Classified section of SOMD Online. Your thread will probably be pulled.

Thank you so much. I am hoping I can find a great local home for him.
There are 2 chichuahuas at the local shelter...older dogs...I hope you can find yours a good permanent home so it doesn't end up at the shelter later in its life...

Actually there are THREE at the shelter. There are plenty of Chichuahua "breeders" :boo: in the area.

Since so many Chi's wind up in the shelter/rescue system, I don't know why anyone would breed an out of standard dog other than for the money.

Yes, it's a cute puppy, but ALL dogs start out as loved, cute puppies.

I have to say that I totally agree with you all in regards to the majority of the breeders out there. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. I moved here from Jacksonville and brought my six adults with me. Of the 6 I have 1 male and 3 breeder females. I also have 2 more that people who didn't want their chis anymore decided to "give away" or take to the local shelter. I have given them a permanant home. I go through a very very stringent process to select a home for my dogs. I only breed 1-2 litters per year and of the 4-6 puppies I have per year, they are ALL sold on a contract where I will buy back the puppy if the owner can't keep the puppy. I am proud to say that I am one of the only breeders I know that does this.
I also spend every penny I get from breeding to support rescue. I have saved hundreds of animals in my lifetime from being put to sleep. I know my limits in how many at one time I can take to provide the best for each one. I have spent many sleepless nights with orphaned kittens, puppies, squirrels and raccoons bottle and syringe feeding. I purchase and donate my time and materials providing shots for the local groups that otherwise couldn't afford it. I purchase dog food, potty pads, newspapers, bedding, towels and anything and everything else for the shelters with the money. So, I am proud to say I put my money, my time, my skills and my heart where my mouth is.
That being said, I know that no one was attacking me personally, I am a very big advocate against backyard breeders or those who breed solely for profit. In the case of this little puppy, he already had a home selected before he was born in FL and the person who was going to get him was diagnosed with terminal cancer. In the interim, my husband was suddenly transferred from FL to VA and I wanted to find a good local home that wanted a sound quality puppy. I had already earmarked the money to be donated to a particular local group in the way of vaccines and syringes, esbilac, etc to provide for the kitten rush that I am sure happens here in the spring, just like in FL.

I hope that maybe people here will not always look down on the newcomer and maybe welcome someone who cares about the animals into the community. I am happy to be here and certainly look forward to providing my help and assistance where needed and wanted. I hope the community and this forum can at least respect that without passing judgement.

And to answer your question. I bred this particular female this time because I had 3 families that wanted puppies. 2 families had members in their house with juvenile diabetes (like my own daughter has) in FL and pay so much money for their diabetes medications and supplies that they couldn't afford the gauged prices of over $2000 per puppy. I offered to breed this particular female because she has the most amazing personality and also because she has the ability to sense when my daughter's blood sugar is low. They are getting their puppies just after Christmas when the puppies are 12 weeks old and have had their third set of shots. The third puppy was going to a very special woman who donated her time with a diabetes group by making sugar free treats for the children in the hospital. However, her husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer when the puppy was 5 weeks old and she called me to tell me that she couldn't take him.

That is why I bred this particular female that wasn't in breed standard (becuase she weighs 1lb over) and it wasn't for the money.

Any REPUTABLE breeder does this.

Trust me, I haven't been posting on this forum long and I seem to have my share of forumites who have passed judgement on me already. It doesn't bother me, I'm comfortable in my beliefs and choices.

Everything else you said about supporting rescue, sounds good. But of course, everyone can say things that "sound good". Only your actions can prove what you say, will I ever know? I doubt it.

I still stand by the fact that with as many Chis that wind up in shelters there is little reason to breed more. All decent breeders (I am saying decent to include the BYB's that do actually care), hope that their puppies do not wind up in the shelter, but, unfortunately in this disposable society we have, odds are either your puppies, or the puppies they breed will wind up in danger of being killed in the shelter.

AND just because your female senses that on your daughter, there is no guarantee that the offspring will provide the same support.

I hope your words are not empty promises of the support you provide to rescue as I think there are enough other "breeders" on this site that have only "hollow" promises.

There are plenty of dogs bred in St Mary's that end up in the shelter...how many Rotties have you seen go thru the system there? How many shep's, labs, beagles? Even poodles...its sad...too many people see their pets as a disposable commodity...

Actions definately speak louder than words. I hope that those who hide behind the guise of the internet will look in the mirror and not pass judgement on me.

On a different note, is there a dog park locally that allows on/off lead play for people to mingle with their dogs? I would like to find one here similar to the one we had in Florida.
