New MD Piggy Back Tax

The company I work for (located in St. Mary's) informed me that an additional $9.00 a pay period (2 weeks) will be taken out for a MD piggy back tax. They made it sound like it was a flat fee and not related to income. Our tried to get some information from the company financial folks, but they haven't responded.

Has anyone heard the source of this new tax?

Unless it is something new -- I believe it is the county tax which is considered to be a 'piggy back' tax on the state tax you pay. Welcome to MD....................

You must have missed the plus sign (+) after the $9.00. I took it to mean at LEAST $9.00 more was being taken out.

No Suz, I am not confusing this with the county piggy back tax. I have been paying that county tax for over 37 years and know well what it is. This is something new that went into effect just now.

I checked the MD tax webpage and the St. Mary's income tax remains at 0.031 of MD adjusted gross.

So what is this new tax?!

I went to the Comptroller webpage to look for information. I found this instead (so far):

No Tax-Free Week for 2004
With surrounding jurisdictions holding tax-free weeks this month, there has been some confusion between these tax-free weeks and the tax-free week offered previously in Maryland. Shop Maryland Week in 2001 was legislated for only one year by the Maryland General Assembly. The 2004 General Assembly did not enact legislation to hold the sales tax-free week again this year. For information on the District of Columbia's tax-free week, please visit the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue Web site. Please keep in mind that purchases made in other jurisdictions, including those purchases made during that jurisdiction's tax-free week, are still subject to Maryland's 5 percent sales and use tax.

That stuff always cracks me up. Technically, every purchase you make from out of state you are supposed to pay your states sales tax. Guess how many people fill out the forms and send in the tax due? :roflmao: It is part of the whole sales and use tax system. However, states just know there is no way to audit or control it, so they don't bother. I love that MD is trying to remind you to pay it right on their website. :lmao:

Your slip rental helps the marina pay their property tax.
