I have been putting her in her crate at night, but she cries everytime. any ideas on how to soothe her so she doesn't keep doing this. have had her since saturday. her crate is in the living room right now. I am afraid to put it in the bedroom for fear that will make it worse. thanks for your help

I've had success with putting the dog in the crate when you're there in the same room. Use short intervals, and when the dog is quiet for a few minutes, let it out and praise it. Try getting a special toy or bone that you give only when the dog is in the crate. You can also get an empty soda can, place a few pennies inside and tape shut. Then when the dog barks give the can a hard shake. Eventually the pup will learn it's ok to be in the crate, and not ok to bark while in the crate.

Just be patient and consistent. Good luck!

When we brought Bogart home I was ready with a windup clock (old time) I hid under his blankies. As it turns out I didn't need it. But have you thought of trying it? Maybe the sound of everyone's heartbeat is being missed.... Just a thought.

Place some articles of clothing of yours in the crate with him/her. Something that has your scent on it like a pillow case, shirt, jacket, blanket.

Also keep the door to the crate open when he/she isn't in it. At nap time, place the puppy in the crate and leave the door open. They need to learn that the crate is a safe place, and not punishment. Maybe sneak a treat in there when they aren't looking and let them find it on their own.

Make sure the pup has a warm soft place to lay inside the crate. I know this is hard, especially when you are using the crate to potty train, but wash the soiled bedding frequently and replace with dry bedding. It can be cold and uncomfortable for him/her laying on just the hard plastic.

All my dogs were crate trained, we gave them a little treat every time they we locked up in the crate. They always had a blanket and a couple of stuffed animals with them when they were locked up. At night we would move the crate into the bedroom and make sure the puppy could see us sleeping in the bed thru the crate door. Puppys like to be close to their owners so try to stay in the room with the crate as much as possable to help them adjust.

We did the same thing with bruno (had the crate in teh same room as us during the day) we left the crate door open and only a couple times in the year and a half we put her in her crate she went in and laid down and played with her toys or chewed her rawhide bone. She totally hates it to this day still when we have to leave and can't take her with us she sits up in my apt and barks her head off for a few minutes then eventually will lay down and take a nap til we come back get her.

I just need to figure a way to keep her from being so excited as she has torn my stomach up with her claws because she jumps on me when i enter my apt now that she no longer sleeps in a crate.

You created that problem when you didn't correct it from the beginning. Who is the pack leader? Bruno.

Same with her barking when you leave her. You need an intervention. If the Dog Whisperer is called in, let me know. I need to let him know he is my future husband.

I had never crate-trained a dog before the one I have now. Now I'd never NOT crate-train one. We did the "treat reward" for going into her crate. The first few nights, she'd wimper but I laid down on the floor for a minute and reassured her that she wasn't alone and that she was fine. Just took a day or two before she was fine with it. Even to this day (2 yrs later) she'll beat me up the stairs and gets into her crate, knowing that she will get a treat.

Have you tried putting a T-shirt you have worn but not washed. (Yeah, I know.....sounds gross); but if you try that at night when 'it's time to go to bed', maybe she will be quiet.

I was putting her in a small carrier with a blanket, she cried. I moved her to a wire crate(sectioned off) with an old robe of mine and an old blanket ,she cried. this morning I put in a fresh blanket and a few chew toys, she whined. My other dogs are crate trained. All I have to do is tell them "Bed" and they go in. I also give them a treat for going in. they sleep in my bed at night, but always get crated when I am not home. I think tonight I will try to put her crate in my room to see if that makes a difference.

I don't recall seeing if you said how long you have had your new puppy.
Maybe she is still not used to her new home yet?

To bad you didn't bring a blankie with you when she got picked up. The blankie or towel could have been rubbed over littermates. That way she had her littermate's scent.

When we first brought our guy home as a baby he slept in his crate in the bedroom. He would cry but we could put our hand down and touch him.

Now he goes in his crate and takes naps.

Cool! I'm sure we will get past this stage eventually. just looking for ways to help her fell secure.

I'm a big advocate of allowing your puppy to sleep in the same room with you, though NOT in the same bed. Dogs are pack animals and want to be with their pack at night. Sleeping in the same room helps a young puppy feel more secure and helps to build a stronger bond. If you don't want to carry the crate back and forth each night, try tethering the puppy on his bed right beside your side of the bed. You can easily sooth him if he starts to whine but the real plus is that he will wake you up if he needs to elimate in the middle of the night.

I totally agree. I've raised a few pups and fostered several dogs. We've always had them sleep in the same room with us and have found that the puppies sleep better, don't have accidents and will wake us up when they need to go outside. Our foster dogs also seem to adjust to the transition faster when they share the bedroom with us.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice. I will try putting her in our room tonight to see if that makes a difference. She sounds so sad when she cries!!!
