New School Year

All of us know that another school year is just around the corner. Another year of arguing about homework, or being told "I didnt have any". Another year of helping with projects, just to make sure they get done. Another year of saying "this year is going to be different". Well:

This year is going to be DIFFERENT! My 8 yr old does very well in school, and NEVER complains about doing her homework. Hopefully, this will continue, with the new school year.

My 12 yr old is another story. I swear, I didnt even think she was going to pass the 6th grade, last yr. Well, she did.

I would like to hear from you other moms/dads...on what YOUR rules are about school/homework/ etc.. What are your requirements? Last yr I kinda slacked. We started out with firm rules about when homework should be done, but by the middle of the yr, it was sometimes being done in the morning, before school.

I was hoping, that if I heard some feedback on how you handle schoolwork, talking on the phone, being on the computer etc..that it may help me set up some type of schedule with my girls. For instance: Do your children do their homework as soon as they get home, do they have a snack first, what is the cutoff time for phone calls during the school week, what time is bedtime? Etc..

My kids get home at 4:10. Homework is to be started at 5:00. That 50 minutes is theirs for snack, downtime, TV, etc. TV doesn't go on again until EVERYONE is finished with homework. If homework isn't finished by bedtime, (usually because we have evening activities) they get up first thing in the morning and do it.

It depends... They usually have a snack and do their homework at the same time. My kids school gives out homework on Monday for the entire week. Sometimes if we have plans during the week they will do more then one night's homework on Monday. When it gets dark early they can play outside for awhile and then do homework BUT if they give me a hard time then the next day they can't go out until it's done.

Oldest used to hate homework. I tried right after school, then we tried an hour break after school then homework, then we tried after dinner.. nothing helped. THANK GOD she outgrew that.

None of mine talk on the phone so that is one worry I don't have.

Hopefully my 12 yr old will be different this yr. I'd hate to think of another yr like lst yr.

My girl is 11 and will be starting middle school. Her bedtime is 9:30. Homework is started when she arrives home and she is not allowed to do anything until it is finished. This has been her routine since kindergarten, though her bedtime used to be earlier. No problems, good grades!

Mine too. It just works better that way, it is hard to re-focus the kids after they have been home then playing for a while. At least after school they are somewhat calm AND what they learned that day is fresh on their mind.
They do it, I check it, then they can play. :yay:

My son is 10 and going into 5th grade this year.
It has always been my routine to have him come in- get a snack and start homework.
No playing with friends until it is done and done right. If it isn't done right or it's sloppy becaused he rushed- it will be done over.

My 7 year old does his homework right when he gets home. He might have a snack while he does it. Most of the time the homework only takes him 5-10 minutes to do and sometime we might do 1-2 days worth of homework at a time if there is something going on during the week like soccer practice. Seems to work well for him. He likes school though and has been playing "Teacher" with his little brother all summer so I think he's anxious to get back in school.
