Friends,
I moved to to central Florida a couple of months ago, wanting to take advantage of the better climate and quality of life here in the Melbourne, Florida area. When I say quality of life, I mean devoid of the rude, aggressive drivers (or otherwise in any other other everyday situations), bad traffic, and high prices of the DC area.
However, I will tell you that I will miss my memories of the DC area, particularly those of my growing up in Prince Georges County, MD (Deer Park Heights/Marlow Heights). I see that a lot of us have moved out (or away from the area, as in my case), to such places as Waldorf or Lexington Park. I was a "child of the 60s and 70s", having gone to elementary school at Sandymount Elementary in Marlow Heights, as well as Benjamin Stoddert Jr. High School, also in Marlow Heights. Man, I miss those days, and I would enjoy corresponding with those that grew up in that area, too.
I worked at both the Red Barn on St. Barnabus Road (which we used to call the "Dead Barn"), and the Jr. Hot Shoppes in front of the Iverson Mall. That was back in the early to mid 70s. Does anyone remember the Royal Burgers and Pappy Parker fried chicken? I went to Potomac High School for one semester back in '74, but after that my family moved to West Virginia. However, the DC area, and particularly that Marlow Heights area of Prince Georges County, have remained in my mind.
As I said, I do have very good memories of the area, but inevitably things change, and the area wasn't what I remembered it to be, all in the name of progress. But in spite of that change, I still have those memories of Marlow Heights, MD, back in the mid to late 60s until the mid 70s. Anyone remember the Bunny Man? The Great Zucchini on Channel 20 (I'd pay through the nose for tapes/DVDs of his old shows), Captain 20, or Sir Graves Ghastly on WDCA Channel 9? Remember buying those huge "Big Buddy" bubble gums at the 7-11? The weekly 7-11 Slurpee radio comercials (of course, on WEAM or WPGC)?
I appreciate this forum and look forward to many future travels down memory lane, of Prince Georges County, so long ago.
