InvenioIP database provides venture capitalists, angel investors and companies with centralized resource to identify cutting-edge technologies available for commercialization

COLUMBIA, Md. (Jan. 14, 2008) – The Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) announced today that it has helped fund the new technology and intellectual property database, InvenioIP. The web-based resource was developed at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), and allows free access to technologies available for commercialization from academic institutions, federal government research facilities and private companies in Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia. InvenioIP’s database can be accessed at www.InvenioIP.org.

Before the creation of InvenioIP, patent information for early stage technologies was not readily available, making the process of seeking out new innovations time-consuming for potential investors. InvenioIP simplifies this process by centralizing one database for cutting-edge technologies developed by research institutions throughout the mid-Atlantic.

“TEDCO is excited to be supporting such a valuable resource for the Maryland technology and investor communities,” said Renée Winsky, president and executive director of TEDCO. “InvenioIP is a one-stop shop for those seeking progressive innovations, and a valuable resource for researchers, developers and technology investors.”

Launched late last year, InvenioIP currently provides summaries and investigator contact information for more than 1,900 technology innovations from a broad range of disciplines. Each summary provides a brief description of the technology, along with potential applications, licensing and patent information. <INS cite=mailto:Kathleen%20Shea dateTime=2008-01-11T17:02></INS>

“We saw a great need for a searchable database of technologies and intellectual property available for commercialization,” said Mike Rollor, vice president of commercial ventures & intellectual property at UMB. “InvenioIP allows researchers and investigators to market their technologies through a single web portal easily accessible by companies and investors.”

InvenioIP eliminates the need for searching individual websites for technologies available for licensing, allowing users to rapidly locate innovations that match their needs. The site’s<INS cite=mailto:Kathleen%20Shea dateTime=2008-01-11T17:08> IpPULSE</INS> list-serve function allows users to develop technology search criteria and receive automatic updates when new information is added to the website. InvenioIP is available to the general public and requires no registration or fee for users.

“I was impressed by the quick results and inquiries that InvenioIP provided,” said Sara Miller, technology transfer associate at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC). “We posted our technology and within 24 hours we received an inquiry. InvenioIP allows for quick and easy leads for technology transfer.”

InvenioIP lists technologies developed at The Johns Hopkins University; The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory; the University of Maryland, Baltimore; the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute; the University of Maryland, College Park; the College of William and Mary; Georgetown University; USAMRMC; and Avanti Therapeutics. UMB will continue to expand the number of organizations posting entries and, at present, is actively working with five universities and two companies interested in joining the <INS cite=mailto:Kathleen%20Shea dateTime=2008-01-11T17:14>InvenioIP </INS>community.<DEL cite=mailto:Mike%20Rollor dateTime=2008-01-09T16:43> </DEL>
