New to vegetable gardening, Any Advice?

Hey All!

I am new to gardening, and was wondering what kinds of vegetables grow well in the Soil down here in California, MD. I have wetlands in my front yard so my yard tends to stay kinda wet in most spots.

i would like to grow some tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, carrots, Green Peppers, Spinach, Herbs and lettuce.

Any advice on what to do when to do it and how to do it would be greatly appreciated.

What size gargen you plan? Till in fertilizer first and now is time to start.
Get a soil sample and run it to southern states wait for results and git er dun

I grew up on a farm here and we always had a huge garden. You should have no problem with growing what you mentioned. Get started now and fertilize and water as needed. Check out the local greenhouses you can get your tomato plants there and they can give some great advice too.

Im not sure how they do it, but someone has mastered the process because the store shelves are full of them.

You should have no problems growing any of those in this area. Just remember what climate zone you're in (we're zone 7) and plant accordingly. Our average frost-free date for this area is April 15th.

One great source of information is the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service.

If you don't have great drainage in your yard, you either need to improve it by adding lots of organic matter to your soil or use raised beds.

Are you planting in the winter....You should have everything in the ground by mid October at the latest...

Good for you! No matter how it turns out, I am sure you will find it a theraputic experience.

Do like the boatdoctor said in his post and get you tomater plants from SS or another greenery store.
I have tried to start mine from seed in the past and the are usually to flimsy to put outside when they need to go out.
Pepper plants, too.
Squash does well down here.
However, like jazz said, if drainage is a problem you should use raised beds.
Squash lay on the ground from the vine and tend to rot easily.
I just pile the dirt up and make a mound. That usaully does the trick. Same with cucumbers.
You can do all sorts of neat stuff, such as planting marigolds to help deter insects.
I grew a crop of spinach last year. It does well in all day sun but must be harvested earlier than other veggies, cause it cannot tolerate summer heat.

Just give it a shot and you will learn as you go, that is the fun part.
Weeding your garden will consume alot of your time. That is the theraputic part.

I never had much success gardening in the soil down here till I started cheating.

I use raised beds and potting soil now.
