New Year's Day Soup

Railroad

Routinely Derailed
I went looking via Google to find the recipe and was dazed by all of the soups which are called "New Year's Day Soup."

My ex-wife made this soup from a recipe a coworker gave her 20+ years ago. I can't recall it exactly, but it's something like this:

A bag of fresh spinach
1 cup of chopped leftover ham
1/2 cup of cooked and crumbled smoked bacon
1 can of diced tomatoes
1 can of beans (type is unimportant, seems like black-eyed peas worked well)
1 tablespoon of smoke seasoning
1 quart of water or chicken broth

Bring everything to a boil. Let it simmer for about 45 minutes. Add pasta if you wish. Enjoy.

The fable is that the soup helps a hangover. I think it may have helped mine one year, but honestly don't recall.

Since you mentioned black-eyed peas, you made me remember that my Mother used to have them every New Years day. She said you had to eat them for good luck. So, maybe you want to stick with the black-eyed peas.

Happy New Year! :buddies:

My wife, who is from Bermuda and still a subject of the silly crown, makes a mean red bean soup using her family recipe from way back, mostly the Portagee side.

That stuff rocks, especially when it is cool outside.

Happy New Year!

I thought it was Black Beans that gave you good luck. No matter, because Bean Soup is great. Happy New Year everyone.

Happy New Year's Eve, y'all! I hope 2014 treats everyone well. Can't believe how time flies!

Growing up, my mother always served black eyed peas on NY's Day for luck. I did not carry on that tradition.

Are you saying it doesn't help with memory loss?

A Bermudian, from Bermuda, living in Fl with her Yank husband making killer Portagee (her that side of the family call themselves that, while her northern Europe side just call themselves Onions) red bean soup.

Yum.

Easy ' Good Luck Soup' for one.

Beans are in soak for the 15 bean soup. Hoppin Jack already made so we can get our luck on in the morning.

I've had that soup, but with kale instead of spinach.

I'll be cooking pork roast, sauerkraut, mash potatoes and rolls.

Have decided to give the black eyed peas a try this year, too. For my Dad. He use to say as others have said about the luck thing.

I made apple cake today for dessert tomorrow.

I'm a soup junkie admittedly and don't want to get better. I eat soup every day. This thread has made me just  and snag some recipes.
