Do these media outlets just mouthpiece press releases? There doesn't seem to be real reporting anymore.

Wonder how this victim made out?

News stories used to be sent to a teletype machine from a very few reliable sources, and reporters would either use it as is or dig a little deeper and embellish. Today they get an email or newsfeed and just re-print it.

Which makes you wonder why J-school is still a thing. Do you need formal training to read/print press releases verbatim?

The internet pretty much killed the local newspaper. They also did it to themselves by reporting less local news.

Every town back in the had a local newspaper. You would find all sorts of news inside. Reporters actually went out and dug up facts and reported.
