Strung Out
...a buddy of mine always has an interesting take on the sports questions of the day and the latest is MVP/player of the year.
LT won MVP and that's fine; I viewed him as such with no reservations until Kenny suggested that the NFL should have two awards, one for MVP, one for POTY.
His reasoning; While LT had an unreal season, Brees was more valuable to his team than LT was to his, thus, LT = player of the year, Brees, MVP.
To further his argument, his point is that San Diego would still most likely have made the playoffs even without LT. They would win more games with LaDanien, certainly, and are clearly better with him, but, there is a solid argument to make that the drop off wouldn't be huge without him.
Not so with Brees. They're not even .500 without him.
So, we can argue those two points and, frankly, that should be the goal of an award; it's worthy of discussion.
Player of the year; for a fantastic personal achievement.
MVP; Most valuable player.
Someone could be both, but, I agree with the argument that this past season, LT wasn't both.
