NFL; MVP vs. player of the year...

...a buddy of mine always has an interesting take on the sports questions of the day and the latest is MVP/player of the year.

LT won MVP and that's fine; I viewed him as such with no reservations until Kenny suggested that the NFL should have two awards, one for MVP, one for POTY.

His reasoning; While LT had an unreal season, Brees was more valuable to his team than LT was to his, thus, LT = player of the year, Brees, MVP.

To further his argument, his point is that San Diego would still most likely have made the playoffs even without LT. They would win more games with LaDanien, certainly, and are clearly better with him, but, there is a solid argument to make that the drop off wouldn't be huge without him.

Not so with Brees. They're not even .500 without him.

So, we can argue those two points and, frankly, that should be the goal of an award; it's worthy of discussion.

Player of the year; for a fantastic personal achievement.

MVP; Most valuable player.

Someone could be both, but, I agree with the argument that this past season, LT wasn't both.

Sounds like your buddy was listening to Peter King on the Dan patrick show yesterday, but I agree. Brees was far more valuable to NO then LDT(I refuse to use "LT" for anyone but #56)was to SD.

...that's a coincidence. We talked about this back when LT won the MVP. Did they mention this in the context that the league is thinking about it or just chat?

As far as the real 'LT', gotta go with the original!

Wouldnt you statistically have to enact the George Bailey clause here, and remove each player and ALL of their stats to figure out who was more valuable?

You would have to go back through each game and see how many TDs tomlinson scored through each game, remove them and see what the score was... Fugure out what the average running back scored this year....:blahblah:

...we could do that but, first, I need to learn what the George Bailey clause is!

I agree with you Larry, if you take away the 2 players in this conversations, Brees and Tomlison from their teams... I believe SD maybe lose a few TD's here or there, but the back ups to LT were friggin awesome... and with Neal and SD offensive line blocking for them, they are going to score regardless.

Now in NO, I think Brees goes out, they win 5-6 games this year...at most..

...because my MVP vote was LT! I hadn't though of it in terms of 'value', just achievement.

Frankly, MVP, POTY, it's all stupid in the context of team sport like football where LT is not so hot without his O line and Brees ain't as hot without all the weapons he had in NO. Coaching plays a huge part, injuries are a factor, turnovers, etc.

Hell, with all the parity in the NFL, would Indy be where they are without Vinatieri?

King said it was his opinion(shared by some others) that the NFL should consider separating the awards. He cited Tomlinson v Brees as his comparison. He said that SD without Tomlinson would still go ~10-6, whereas NO without Brees probably wouldn't have made it to .500. I think the .500 statement was a little bit over the top considering the state of the NFC, but I understand. Extrapolating this logic a little further.....It should have been Mangini not Payton as Coach of the Year. Payton got the owner to ante up and bring Brees in, and they drafted Bush. Mangini actually LOST John Abraham AND Curtis Martin and had the Jets sweating the Pats til the end of the season.
