Give a dog a bone?

I know Apollo shouldn't have chicken bones because they splinter, but what about pork or beef bones? I mentioned the prime rib bone I gave him at Christmas in that other tread: the reason I took it from him is that it had a lot of meat and fat on it and I didn't want him to get sick, not because of the bone itself.

So what's the consensus on dogs and bones?

Ass-hole
I have given my doggies, t-bones and pork chop bones in the past with no problems. They also have a big ham bone that a butcher cleaned and boiled, they chew on that once in awhile.

There's something known as the BARF diet, which is composed of such things as whole, raw, chickens and rabbits. As long as the carcasses aren't cooked, the bones retain enough collagen that the don't splinter. My dogs favorite treat in the summer is frozen, raw, chicken wings (referred to at our house as chickencicles).

As stated by Merlin99, as long as the bones aren't cooked. However, don't give raw Pork bones. You can get Marrow Bones from the grocery Store, or from Pepper's Pet Pantry. I was giving my dogs raw Venison & bones, but they got a severe case of Coccidiosis, and leptospirosis from them. It cost several hundred dollars to take care of that. Raw chicken bones have been given to them in the past, but be careful, they can be swallowed whole causing a whole lot of other problems, like blockages.

It is my understanding that cooked bones splinter so if they are raw, they should be alright.
Like any other treats, toys etc. you are best to always supervise when he has it!

My dogs love love LOVE those big soup bones you get from the butcher department in the grocery store. I freeze them in the summer and they stay outside gnawing on them for hours !!!

What do wild dogs eat?? Foxes?? Wolves? Coyotes? Feral Chihuahua? (would they be feral if you let them go in Mexico??)

Bloomberg hasn't made it illegal so it has to be ok..

I thought the same thing before I moved in with the QOTW.. and she ALWAYS fed her dogs chicken bones. I was mortified, but I succumbed to her beauty and now feed both our dogs at least the bones from the wings..

That and I think the splintering problem is much less an issue for cooked chicken.. as I THINK the bones shatter more than splinter.

It's been over 8 years now, and we're constantly feeding the dogs chicken bones and other bones..

Oh, and we have an entire box of cow leg bones in the basement..

I guess it's not so good for the cow, but the neighbor's dog (the Meth Lab)seems to enjoy them.. Gabbie won't touch them.
