NICU Gifts?

I am wanting to get a special Christmas gift for the NICU staff that have just been absolutely amazing to me and my boys - but I'm a little unsure of what to get! Even if I spent $10 for every person I would like to thank I would be in excess of $200 and I just don't have it like that. I was thinking of a cookie platter (higher shelf life for those that may not be working on Christmas day) but I'm unsure about food. I really want to thank them somehow - after all, they're taking care of 2 of the 3 most precious things in my life! (Not to mention the compassion they've shown to me during my moments of heartache and grief.)

I know the hospital is always taking monetary donations and my mom, a quilter with her own store, is planning to make a couple of quilts to raffle off with the proceeds going to the hospital on behalf of Baby A and Baby B, but that won't be in time for the holidays.

Any ideas?

Edible Arrangements, you can't go wrong with fruit. I gave this as a gift to an office full of people and they all loved it. The prices aren't too bad for as many people as one arrangement can feed.

When my son was in the NICU for Christmas, I took in a Spiral Ham and all the trimmings for all those dedicated nurses that were away from their own family that day to take care of mine! I personally delivered it and they were oh so thankful (considering hospital food isn't the best around)! Even took Brownies for dessert!!!!! Just a thought.....

I was thinking maybe angel ornaments but then thought perhaps not everyone celebrated Christmas.

I'm so glad your babies are progressing well and hope that they continue to improve. They'll be home in no time!

I like that idea  a honey baked ham some rolls mustard and some type of a treat. Or you could get a few platters from Chik Fil A everyone loves Chik Fil A :yum:

A card or a batch of homemade cookies. This won't break your bank, and they do appreciate homemade cookies. Ask them first if it is okay to make homemade cookies for them since I don't know the hospital policy.

A donation to a birth-defect or maternal health charity in their honor. Maybe March of Dimes?

How about a personal thank you letter (handwritten or on the computer)with a foot print or hand print of your family's little ones on the bottom. Put it in a nice frame. Maybe a Christmas photo of your family cold be enclosed with it.

You could easily do this in addition to the dinner idea- that is wonderful.

I've tea stained my stationary before I put the paper through the printer. Anything with berries gives it a red tint. Let it dry completely, then put it in the printer. Use whatever you like.

That is a really cute idea too!

You could also make up a basket full of goodies (crakers, coffees, hot cocoa, candies, cookies, etc...) and bring that in.

I like all the ideas. Think my favorite is home-baked cookies, bread, muffins, or something like that. One thing to remember is that there are generally three different shifts, so it would be nice if you could make sure to leave one basket (or whatever you decide) for each. That way, nobody comes in to work to see a nice Thank You card and a plate of crumbs!

Glad to hear that the babies are improving! Hope they're home with you really soon! :huggy:

Food delivered on Chistmas eve, and Christmas morning (should be two different shifts)..

Ask about their shifts, they may run 3 8 hour shifts, or 2 12's, but try to stop in with something for each shift.

Doesn't matter what, I think they'll be VERY impressed that you were thinking of them.. especially the ones on the 11-7 shift, they always get forgot.

You may want to ask WHAT is allowed. I would think some ICU/ NICU may have strict rules on what they can and can't have at the nurses station.

Just ideas. But kudo's for you for thinking of them.

I was in the hospital a week before my little angel came and then left. The nurses were wonderful. I loved LOVED my doctor.

The week after the funeral when things had calmed down a bit we ordered a luncheon platter with desserts to be delivered to the floor and cards were sent. To the doctor, well .. he gets my never ending thanks for all he could do, yearly christmas cards with pictures of the boys I have now and a donation was made in Zachary's name to Neonatal Intensive Care at the hospital.

I'm glad your babies are doing well. :yay:

This sent a chill down my spine. I didn't realize you had lost a baby - I am so sorry to hear that.

There were some great ideas here - thank you!!! I really like the dinner idea - doubt I will do homemade, just because of time - but I will check the policy when I go up later today to make sure it's okay that I bring food. I know their shifts are 7-7 so all could be covered with a ham meal there.

I can't imagine NOT acknowledging them up there - some of the nurses I know so well at this point. . . I have great respect for people who help others in doing the things I just couldn't do. . . like working with sick or premature babies (my heart just couldn't handle it). Heck, I even give my daycare providers generous gifts! Like I said, my children are the most precious things I have in my life - and I have no reservations in rewarding them for being kind souls to care for my children like parents when I can't be everywhere at once.

My son (who is now 17) was born at 28 weeks. He was in the NICU of St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. When he left, we had a plaque made. On the plaque was a poem or saying that we made up and had engraved on it. It also had my sons name and the date he was born. It is still hanging on the walls of the NICU to this day.
