Night Guards

Anyone had any positive/negative experiences with night guards??

Dentist said I needed one and I thought I'd ask around before I shoveled out a couple hundred dollars for one.

Already tried those cheap ones you get at the store and they don't work!

My wife uses a night guard every night and has no complaints. She definitely knows in the a.m. when she hasn't slept with it in.

Tooth grinder or jaw clencher?

The best are the Nti-tss appliances, they are small and hook on your front teeth- I think the only dentist near by that makes them is Dr. Barley or Dr. Christie... they run @ 150.00

you can google nti and read about it... it's awesome.. most appliances/guards from the dentist run upwards of 800-1000 and they don't work... if you are a grinder you will just wear the guard out... or clench or grind the guard and you still have the same problems..you just grind the guard instead of your teeth...

the nti appliance is such that the teeth can not touch what so ever..

Oh and if you get your dr or dentist to write an RX for the appliance you can submit it to your health insurance as medical equipment rather than under your dental insurance... cuz most dental insurance won't pay for a night guard

My mother swears by hers........she is a tooth grinder, and it relieved her of her headaches.

I wear one because im a grinder and clencher. Without it in the morning you sometimes feel like you got beat up during the night. Mine was made by the dentist and has clips that snaps it on my teeth to keep it in.

My mom wears them because she grinds so hard you can actually hear it from the other room(s). No more grinding and/or headaches since though

I have used one for the past 10 years and it has helped immensely. But I am not a grinder...I am a clencher. I have had the same nightguard for the past 10 years so it has been well worth the $ for me. I keep thinking that I need a new one since mine is so old but the dentist tells me that it is just fine.

I have one of the thin, clear, almost invisible ones. Expensive, but works great. In the long run, it' better than all the headaches and paying to fix chipped teeth.

Thanks for all the responses . I'm a grinder and I'm leaning towards getting the guard. The dentist said my teeth were pretty worn from the grinding considering my age...just wasn't sure if the guard was going to work.

It took me reading 3 replies to realize yall weren't talkin about security guards or rent-a-cops.

I got one, and bit through it in six months. So they made a thicker one, and it lasted about a year. That exhausted my insurance TMJ benefit, so I have not replaced it.

Since then, I have learned to deal with my stress a lot better. I don't go to bed worrying any more, and that seems to have stopped my grinding/clenching. I almost never have any TMJ symptoms anymore.

I personally recommend TotalGard's night guard (StressGard). I no longer grind or clench my teeth at night. I can finally sleep in peace again. I know I am responding a tad late .. did you come up with a decision?

I mentioned some pain in my jaw to the dentist a few visits back and was told that it looked as if I was grinding or clenching my teeth. They recommended a guard but my insurance doesn't cover it and shortly after, the pain in my jaw went away. Recently I have noticed upon waking that my face feels tired so I assume I am doing it again. Searched and found this thread. Interesting to see that it can cause headaches. I have always had issues with frequent headaches, but I have noticed lately that I have them more often despite being on daily meds to help prevent them. Maybe this is why. hmmmm....

You can look at the chewing surface of your teeth to see if bruxism (Grinding the teeth) is the problem. The teeth will be worn looking. Another problem may be TMJ. This is where the little disks between the mandible, and the maxilla (upper & lower jaw) might be out of place. It can slip in and out here & there. Either way, store bought appliances are not good. It will take you a while to get use to wearing the guard at night but you should consider getting it soon. It will make a world of difference to you.

I started recently and I just went to the sports section of walmart and got a mouth guard. I had to trim it some because it has some sharp edges on it but hey it cost 99 cents and is doing the job nicely now.

You are the first person who I have heard say that the ones in the store work. Guess its worth a try. I wouldn't be out much if it doesn't work for me.

I work with an oral surgeon who says they're not good. He doesn't make the guards so I'm not trying to drum up business for either a regular Dentist, or my boss. But PE, if it works for you, that's great! Like CRH, I've never heard anyone saying that the store bought ones did them any good.
