Good Morning Parents,

First off let me say I am very proud that my son is in high school and has decided to start his blue prints of what to do after high school. He's playing football at the junior varsity level, knowing football isn't guaranteed he's enrolled in NJROTC.

What are the pros and cons of NJROTC? I wouldn't see any share with me any knowledge you may have.

TIA:coffee:

My nephew did JROTC...

Before he was in that program he was a spoiled brat with no respect for anyone and sat on his ass playing video games.

After the program, he is polite, respectful to his parents and other elders, clean and organized.... He makes his own bed in the morning and thanks his mother for taking the time to make him breakfast. :coffee:

I am not saying it is like this for everyone but his experience definitely made me go :eyebrow:

I didnt have a kid in NJROTC but I have had dealings with a few kids that did. Everyone of them was nice, polite, and respectful.

I did NJROTC in high school and loved it. Most of my best friends today are guys I met back in NJROTC. It teaches you how to take things seriously when you need to but there is also a lot of down time to have fun. There are also a number of activities within ROTC that you can do. There are PT events, drill team, air rifle team, orienteering, academic team etc...

In terms of real benefits it opens you up to a number of scholarships and gives you a large advantage towards ROTC scholarships and admittance to one of the service acadamies. You can also enlist in the military at the rate of E-3 (E-2 for USMC). You can also meet all of your high school community service requirements doing NJROTC events. I never had to do anything extra and I was well over the number of required hours.

I went to Patuxent and they were the third ranked NJROTC unit in the nation while I was there. I'm not sure how much that has changed though, it has been quite a few years.

I'm hoping both my sons do this when they get to PHS.

As I said on my FB page just this morning, I passionately & enthusiastically recommend & support this program! Those who know me IRL know that my son has done very well (even with a few HS ups & downs) in ROTC and just started his 4th year.

...at work right now, but can PM you with more specifics later, if you'd like.

I can say that Thing2 fit right in with the discipline, respect for authority, & structure of ROTC. I expected & taught those qualities of both my sons already. HOWever - during a few of his trying "teenaged" moments - if I couldn't "modify his behavior or attitude"'one text or call to his Naval Science Instructor and he snapped to. :jet:

It may not be for all kids - but it is a good match for a LOT of kids - especially my kid. :yay:
