CHICAGO — A nurse who helped a Chicago police officer from a wrecked squad car and was later accused of stealing a weapon has been awarded $7.7 million by a federal jury for false arrest.

In November 2002, a car ran a stop sign in Rachelle Jackson's neighborhood, slamming into a squad car. According to her attorney, Jackson, who was walking nearby, found the officer behind the wheel unconscious and the passenger, Officer Kelly Brogan, dazed.

She pulled Brogan from the wreckage. Soon after, police approached Jackson and told her that the driver's weapon had been stolen.

Jackson was accused of the theft. She was charged and spent more than 10 months in the Cook County Jail awaiting trial. Her case was later thrown out by a judge and Jackson sued the city of Chicago.

Defense attorney Andrew Hale said the amount the jury awarded Jackson was "excessive."

10 months ...... what happened to a speedy trial ...

Maybe the Police and DA's action were excessive ......... :smack:

well good for her .........

lessoned learned here ....
leave cops is wrecked cars to die, unless you want to risk jail time, if a weapon comes up missing ....

To be honest, if people are in a wrecked car and there is no danger of explosion, you are probably better off to leave unconscious people sitting right where they are until emergency personnell are on hand with the proper equipment and training to immobilise injuries and remove them without causing further injuries.

Way to go. History shows that alienating the populace greatly helps public safety.

Chicago, another place that I will never set foot in.

Well that maybe true but not everyone to come along is going to be able to make that assessment, this woman was doing a nobel and brave thing and what does she get in return?

UFB, where was she suppose to be hiding the gun when the next arriving officers showed up?

Also from the Tribune article
,"This was an innocent woman who saved a police officer from a burning car," said Chris Smith, who tried the case with Dan Alexander. "There were many heroes out there who helped the police, but they all turned into suspects because some guy ran away with the gun."
I know it comes from a lawyer but he does say that the car was already on fire.

Burning cars are a different situation.

It was the defense lawyer who said the car was on fire. The news said the car was smoking. News report also suggested the woman only helped one of the two officers from the car, leaving the driver in the car.
