shelters, no... places, I dunno...
I've been in and out of the shelter a great deal lately.... and I have to say I've had a change of heart these last few months. The shelter has cages and cages of kittens & cats needing homes, just stacked on top of each other and sadly, most will never find one. They will be put to sleep. I never ever thought I'd post this but ferals need to be fixed and that requires resources and resources cost money... and money for charitable pet organizations and rescue is so precious in these economic times that wasting it or spending it on ferals seems rather pointless when so many lovable kittens/cats will be put down due to the fact there isn't enough homes.
The reality really is worse than I imagined. My mother was a foster for the HS back in the 70's and 80's and I used to work with her and never saw things this full before.
Now saying that hurts me... because I have a feral that I have rehabilitated to be a pet. Now granted, she isn't a pet under many people's definition of a pet but we are okay with her. My husband and I have agreed that we won't do it again. She's 9 now and has health problems that are directly associated to her poor kitten health and we may have to make some tough decisions with her over the next few years. So... I'm thinking it might be best to just have them trapped and put to sleep. I know that isn't what you want to hear
but ferals don't do well when relocated. Ferals (cats in general) can become very territorial and relocating them is really a last resort that is so complex - so many won't take on the task. I helped my father relocate a feral colony - never again. If he was a poster here, he'd tell you the same thing.
It was a lot of work and they really don't have a very good life expectancy (something like 2-5 years).
