Genesis 9:18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) 19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole earth.
20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.
24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said,
“Cursed be Canaan!
The lowest of slaves
will he be to his brothers.”
26 He also said,
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Shem!
May Canaan be the slave of Shem.
27 May God extend Japheth’s territory;
may Japheth live in the tents of Shem,
and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.”
28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29 Noah lived a total of 950 years, and then he died.
Here's a link to the commentary. It's working again this morning... yay!I also looked up what "got questions" has to say about "Canaan".
Isn't it something.... as soon as Adam and Eve got a bite of the apple... They realized they were naked. No one had to tell them they were naked... they realized it.
Now... Noah and his sons are taking on a new world... a new life. Noah got drunk and his son, Ham, made a joke about Noah's nakedness. Here we go again... right?
I figure Ham said something like.... "I saw Dad's thing... and it ain't nothing to brag about!" OR.... Ham might have said something about a desire to hang out around Dad's thing more... because it was so magnificent. OR... Ham may have been the first homosexual of the new world, bringing that action on his naked dad. At any rate.... Dad's thing isn't something to discuss with the brothers, apparently. Or Noah took it out on Ham, Ham told his brothers, and they "covered it up". At any rate... Ham said something about Noah's nakedness that caused the brothers to cover their dad.
The other two boys "backed in?" Why didn't they just cover their eyes? Didn't they go just a tad out of their way to "cover" their dad's nakedness?
At any rate... it wasn't a very good "cover up" because we all found out about it.
Ham's territory turned out to be the same territory God had picked out for Shem's offspring, "the promised land" or Israel. God will tell Shem's offspring to completely destroy Ham's offspring. We'll get to that when Israel's people get to "the promised land".
Ham will have four sons. One of those sons will be named Canaan. Canaan's descendants will populate Sodom and Gomorrah.
Japheth will have seven sons. They would become "maritime people" and spread out.
Shem will have five sons... and they will become the family line of Jesus the Messiah.
Canaan [Israel] will be a slave to Japheth... verse 27. Rome is in Japheth's family nation. Rome will rule Israel when Jesus is born in Bethlehem.
Noah was 950 years old and he died. He left behind four sons. Noah saw his family grow for 350 years after the flood.
My online Bible titled this section "The sons of Noah". Most people just think of it as the time.....
Noah got drunk and naked!
