Non-slip pads for area rugs

DH and I decided to get an area rug for the living room. Although we hate carpet and love our hardwood floors, an area rug will pull the look of the LR together and make it 'softer'.

So, we have the rug, but now need a pad underneath. If we go with the non-slip pad, well need one that's 8x12. Bed Bath & Beyond has 8x11 for $40.00. Linens 'n' Things has an 8x12 for $100.00

So, I just found these at Wal-Mart:

What do you think? Spend the extra money and get the pad that fits under the whole rug, or get the strips of pad? Have you ever used the strips? Pros? Cons?

I just grab them from WalMart. They work fine. I get them at the store, but not the strips...the ones that are sized to the rug.

I just revised my post...sorry..the whole pad.

Crap, let me start over.

I buy actual padding for the area rugs. Got it at Veins in PF. For the smaller rugs 2x3 or 3x5, I get the non-slip wafflely looking stuff at WalMart.

TY. :huggy:

We've used the pads before for the bedroom area rug, but I've never used the strips. I was just worried if they work as well as the whole pad.

The largest one at Wal-Mart is a foot too short. I guess there's no reason why that wouldn't work though.

I don't use a pad under my living room rug (8' x 11'). I took the rug up on Saturday to take it outside to steam clean it (I didn't want the water to penetrate my floors), and noticed that my hardwood floors are discolored where the rug was laying. Actually, the rug protected the hardwood, and the area outside of the rug was affected by the sun or something. It wasn't too terribly noticeable to the casual observer, but I can tell a difference.

Mine are the same way. They don't look bad but I can see the difference.

Lowes has them back by their rugs. I believe the biggest they had was 8 x 10 and it was $19.99 or something. They also had a different brand for $39.99. I went with the cheaper one and it works fine. They also had the strips.

I am trying to avoid driving all the way down to Lowe's (30 minute trip for me). I might run up to Wal-Mart and see what they have in stock.

I don't think the one in PF has larger than 5x8. KMart has them too but I think they have the same sizes as WalMart.

You know....the non-slip pad for use under a rug doesn't have to be the same size as the rug. For the rug in my bedroom, I took a pad and cut it in strips so that I just covered the perimeter of the rug - the strips are about 6 inches wide and the length of the rug's side. The pad isn't very thick, so it isn't noticeable that I don't have the pad in the center of the rug. Despite not having a rug-sized pad, that rug isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Same thing with the rug in my kitchen.

:huggy: TYVM! I think that's what we'll end up doing. :yay:

I just can't wait to get this rug down. I think it's gorgeous. We got it from Lowe's. It's called "Eva". I ordered it online last night and they delivered it this morning.

Hi, I think that is a beautiful rug. I'm in the market for a rug for the family room and have seen the ones from Lowe's online. I have a question, did you see your rug before ordering and if not, how close were the colors online to the actual rug? Many places only have pictures but I'm worried that the colors are not going to look like the ones in the pictures. Thanks!

Yes, we saw the rug at Lowe's before ordering online. We just weren't sure exactly what size we wanted until we went home and measured the area.

I'd say the colors online are very close, but I'd recommend seeing it in person first. :yay:
