Charles Co. North Point team takes third in Computer Bowl

A team of North Point High School students earned third place in the Southern Maryland Computer Bowl held March 2 at the school. A total of 20 teams and 80 students from Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties participated.

The event features two rounds of activities. First, students complete a written test about computer knowledge. The test includes questions about computer history, software and hardware. The second round is a team exercise in which students create computer programs using programming languages such as Java or Python to solve problems. To complete the rounds, teams were provided with two laptop computers and software for writing computer code.

Students on the North Point team include seniors Caleb Griffith, Erik Henson, Matteo Marchi and Christian Parrales. Melody Stahl, a computer teacher at North Point, coaches the team. As third-place winners, the team received a plaque, trophy and a gift card from SMECO.

Teams from La Plata, Henry E. Lackey and Westlake high schools also participated.

The Computer Bowl was sponsored by SMECO, the College of Southern Maryland, Booz Allen Hamilton, and the tri-county school systems. The event serves to provide students with experiences to prepare them for careers in areas such as software development and cybersecurity.
