Not a Happy Groundhog Time in Florida Today

Deland, where I went to college, sounds like it got hit hard.

I remember when I was going there, my freshman year there was a similar storm around this same time of year. Spawned about 7 or 8 tornadoes and killed over 40 people.

On edit: Noticed 11 of those killed were in Paisley. That's on the edge of the Ocala Forest where my dad and I went camping at Clearwater Lake back when I was a kid. Sad.

"...The Lady Lake Church of God was demolished, its pews, altar and Bibles left in a jumbled mess. The 31-year-old, steel-reinforced structure was built to withstand 150-mph winds, the Rev. Larry Lynn said."

Dancing Up A Storm
The Toll is still rising......

Fla. storms kill at least 20

I lived in Panama City, Fl, for 4 years, and never saw a storm this bad hit central Florida like that.

We had hurricane and tornadoes rip through in the spring and summer, but nothing compared to this. I can't imagine having my house literally torn away by winds, the like of which these folks have seen.

The fear is that there are still many people trapped under damaged homes, yet to be found.

I think the problem is when you have a warm front right up against a cold front, as was the case, it will produce a narrow yet deadly line of storms. The dividing line was right across Central Florida, and that's where the tornados hit.

Very sad--I heard the 911 calls from some of them and they were chilling.

I remember this. The night it happened I was fast asleep at a Bed and Breakfast after having taken some pain meds for a headache. Slept like a baby. Next morning went down stairs to get some coffee to find the television on reporting all the tornadoes.

Was happy I slept through it all.

That was a crazy night. Earlier myself and some of my fellow students were talking outside when the winds began to really pick up like crazy. One of us said he felt his ears pop and we all sort of paniced, ran into the dorm bathroom and stayed in there for a good 15-20 minutes. Thankfully it was a false alarm.

A little later on that night I was with my then girlfriend in my room and we were just watching the television, falling asleep. Every 15 minutes or so, the TV would start beeping for another tornado warning in the area. The last thing I heard before I fell asleep was that a tornado had killed two persons. When I woke up, the death toll was over 40.

There actually was an HBO special on that storm and its effect. Very sad.
