Since the recent release of her new book, “Uncle Tom’s Journey from Maryland to Canada,” which traces the life of Abolitionist Josiah Henson from his birthplace in La Plata, Novelist Edna Troiano has been making news with her account of Henson’s role in bringing slaves to freedom via the Underground Railroad.
A retired professor who chaired the Department of Languages and Literature for 20 years at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), Troiano will read from her book and help bring to life Henson’s journeys during CSM’s April Connections Literary Series. In fact Henson – Troiano will share – was Harriet Beecher Stowe’s inspiration in Stowe’s famous novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”
Troiano, who holds a PhD in comparative literature, is professor emerita of CSM. She has coauthored two college rhetoric texts (Write to Know and The Contemporary Writer) and co-edited an anthology of Christmas literature (The Roads from Bethlehem). Her articles, book reviews, and essays have been published widely in academic journals and popular magazines.
While CSM’s Connections readings are designed to offer the Southern Maryland community a chance to hear from and meet established and emerging local writers up-close-and-personal, the series also produces the Connections Literary Magazine. This regional literary journal features poems, stories, artwork and photography submitted by students, staff and Southern Maryland residents. Publication readings from the magazine take place in December and May each year.
The Connections Literary Series is sponsored by CSM’s English, Communication and Languages Division. Grants have been provided through the Arts Council of Calvert County, the Charles County Arts Alliance, the St. Mary’s County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council.

“He lived an amazing life.
