crabs that is. Does anyone know where I can get them already steamed around twoish in Calvert county? My brother wants them for Saturday BUT he can't find a place over where he lives and I DON'T want to pick them up at Kellams and drive them over. Kellams doesn't even steam them for pick up until after five. Thanks.

Wow - I don't even know where Solomons 7-11 is. I don't get over there very often. My bro lives over there but I think he's just decided to dump it on his sister. I would think crabs would be plentiful this time of year everywhere.

Number 1s are dirt cheap right now....just sayin'... I never buy 2s.
Thanks I'll check into that. My younger brother is coming from VA and paying for them. They're probably more expensive there - he lives in the snotty part of the state.

Tyler's by the 260/261 light in Chesapeake Beach.
Give them a call a couple or three hours before you want to pick them up.

Wish someone would do a comparison, yield wise...Dozen 1s and dozen 2s, same person picking and keeping the yields separate. Last time I got crabs on a regular basis, seemed to me we ran across an awful lot of light 1s..Had some crabs(2s) a couple weeks ago from Tylers and they were the meatiest crabs I've run across in a long time. Maybe their 1s that day were meatier, I dunno, but just from my experience, 1s can be disappointing.

I get mine from local watermen as "payment for services rendered" and they make sure I never get any light 1's. I've seen plenty of them over the years though.. There isn't really a solid definition of what a "number 1" is except for "the largest of the legal-sized crabs we're catching right now". This past year has seen some amazing crabs caught...remained nice and heavy all year.

A lot off people don't understand this. Late summer and early fall crabs are a some of the fattest healthiest crabs of the season. I used to get females from a local waterman for $4/bushel to pick out for freezing. Crab Cakes, crab imperial, crab soup, and crab/macaroni salad all winter long. All packed with meat.

It only lasted until the kids got old enough to realize what I was doing and they would sneak up and empty my bowl as fast as I could fill it. Good times...

You would think my kid would have hooked up his dad,Nope.
He and a friend ran a few dozen traps behind Hearts Desire to Doc Verts place a week or so ago.

Is there a difference in taste between male and female crabs. Centuries ago, when I was still living in Baltimore, people used to claim that the males tasted better than then females. There was even a thing called She Crab Soup which I assumed was made with female crabs, though I wondered if male crabs could be used for the same thing.

Any truth to that story about a difference in taste?
