Numbers 20:22 The whole Israelite community set out from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor. 23 At Mount Hor, near the border of Edom, the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 24 “Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I give the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah. 25 Get Aaron and his son Eleazar and take them up Mount Hor. 26 Remove Aaron’s garments and put them on his son Eleazar, for Aaron will be gathered to his people; he will die there.”

27 Moses did as the Lord commanded: They went up Mount Hor in the sight of the whole community. 28 Moses removed Aaron’s garments and put them on his son Eleazar. And Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain, 29 and when the whole community learned that Aaron had died, all the Israelites mourned for him thirty days.

When I read these verses, I can imagine Aaron helping his son with the many items that were only worn by the Chief Priest. I imagine he told him the significance of each piece. I wonder if they discussed the people who were involved in making them.

The studylight.org site and the easy English site compliment the coverage on these verses.

The passing of Aaron is a huge landmark in the history of Israel; he was the first high priest of the nation - and yet, not exempt from the decree that his generation would perish in the wilderness.

Aaron died as a great, but complex figure, even more so than Miriam. He was used of God mightily, as Moses’ partner (Exodus 4:27-31), to initiate the priesthood (Leviticus 8:1-36), and to plead with Moses for the people (Numbers 16:1-50; Numbers 17:1-13). At the same time, he was instrumental in the grotesque debacle of the golden calf (Exodus 32:1-35) and in challenging Moses’ authority with his sister Miriam (Numbers 12:1-16).

God gave special warning about Aaron’s death, so a smooth and graceful transition could be made in passing down the position of high priest to Aaron’s oldest living son, Eleazar.

Now this is from the easy English site.

God had said that Moses and Aaron would not enter the Promised Land. This was their punishment because they had not followed God’s instructions at Meribah (Numbers 20:12).

God told Moses to go with Aaron and Eleazar up Hor mountain. This was because it was time for Aaron to die. He was 123 years old. It was the first day of the 5th month. It was nearly 40 years since the Israelites had left the country called Egypt. (Numbers 33:38-39).

God did not kill Aaron. Aaron died of natural causes. God had blessed him with a long life. Malachi 2:4-6 describes Aaron’s character. Aaron respected God. Aaron taught the truth and he did not lie. He led many people to turn away from sin. He obeyed God.

Aaron was the High Priest. God wanted Aaron’s son, Eleazar, to be the High Priest after Aaron died. So God told Moses what to do. The High Priest wore special clothes. God had told Moses how to make these clothes (Exodus 28:1-39). Moses had put the clothes on Aaron during a special ceremony, when Aaron became the High Priest (Leviticus 8:7-9). God told Moses to remove these clothes from Aaron and to put them on Eleazar. This showed that Eleazar was the new High Priest. Then Aaron died.

Moses and Eleazar came down from Hor mountain. The people saw that Eleazar was wearing the High Priest’s clothes. So they knew that Aaron was dead. All the Israelites mourned him for 30 days. (To mourn means to be sad after someone has died.) They respected him very much as their High Priest and their leader.

For me.... Aaron was the one who gave us one of the funniest excuse narratives in the Bible.

Exodus 32:24 ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!”

Out popped the calf! Come On Man! :killingme

I know it was a serious deal.... but it was funny too! Out popped a calf....

I'm going to miss Aaron and his sister Miriam.

They were good humans.... most of the time....
