Numbers 20 Water from a rock

Numbers 20:1 In the first month the whole Israelite community arrived at the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.

2 Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron. 3 They quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the Lord! 4 Why did you bring the Lord’s community into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here? 5 Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!”

6 Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the tent of meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. 7 The Lord said to Moses, 8 “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.”

9 So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence, just as he commanded him. 10 He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.

12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”

13 These were the waters of Meribah,[a] where the Israelites quarreled with the Lord and where he was proved holy among them.

a. Numbers 20:13 Meribah means quarreling

First a word about Miriam. She was Moses's sister. The commentary at the easy English site has the nicest things to say about her.

The Israelites arrived at the Zin desert during the ‘first month’. This was the 40th year since they had started their journey. Miriam, Moses’ sister, died in Kadesh. She was over 120 years old. When Moses was a baby, Miriam had saved him from death (Exodus chapter 2). After the Israelites had escaped across the Red Sea, Miriam led the women to thank God (Exodus chapter 15). She had helped her brothers to lead the Israelites during their journey in the desert. She had opposed Moses once and she had suffered a punishment for that (Numbers chapter 12). But she was a very great woman. We can be sure that Moses and Aaron were very sad about her death.

The commentary at studylight.org reminds me that Kadesh was where the people questioned the Promised Land.

Through the years of wandering in the wilderness, Israel came back to Kadesh, the place where they rejected God’s offer (Numbers 13:26).

Now.... Speak or Strike....

Specifically, God told Moses to take the rod, but not to use it. Water would be provided if Moses would speak to the rock before their eyes.

Back at Mount Sinai, God told Moses to strike the rock and water came forth (Exodus 17:6). But now he was merely to speak to the rock, yet with the rod in his hand. This rod was a symbol of his authority from God.

Not only did Moses strike the rock instead of speaking to it.... he struck it not once but twice.

It's becoming obvious that Moses is just plain disgusted with the stupid humans and he's starting to disregard the instructions.

Whenever we get something with instructions in our house... we read them. As a matter of fact, while raising my children, I use to call them "destructions" because, as I told them every time, "if you don't read the 'destructions' the project will be destructed."

So Moses not only disregarded the instructions but he lectured the stupid humans in verse 9 calling them rebels.

Korah had been swallowed alive by the earth. His followers had been burned slam up. The stupid humans had been hit by a plague.... and now.... Moses is disregarding God's instruction. God set Moses straight this time. After all this work.... Moses and Aaron don't get to take the people to Canaan.... which is what they had been trying to do for 38 years. Bummer....
