US urges Libya to release Bulgarian nurses

WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (KUNA) -- US President George Bush urged the Libyan government on Monday to release five Bulgarian nurses arrested on charges of infecting more than 400 Libyan children with the AIDS virus.

"The position of the United States government is the nurses ought to be freed," Bush told reporters in a joint press conference with Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov following their meeting at the White House.

The five Bulgarian nurses and one Palestinian doctor charged with infecting the children plan to make a final appeal to the Libya Supreme Court next month in the face of a death sentence by firing squad. They have also been charged with working for Israeli intelligence Mossad. Bush said he discussed the issue of releasing the Bulgarian nurses at length with Parvanov and said the United States has made its position clear to the Libyan government.

Although various reports have resulted in separate findings about the role and alleged intent of the nurses and doctor, some specialists have testified that the children were infected as a result of improper sanity  at the hospital.

The nurses allege they were tortured after their arrest in 1999 by Libyan authorities and Bulgarian officials have called the nurses "hostages." There are talks of a 10-million-dollar payment in compensation from Bulgaria to the families of the Libyan children as a possible exchange for the release of the prisoners, according to reports in various US news media.

Bulgaria is also considering reevaluating the multibillion dollar debt owed by Libya, the reports said. (end) [/B]

I'd say there's a LOT more to this story than is being told.

The nurses are clearly not guilty. They traveled to Libya in the 1990s to find work at a time when the Bulgarian economy was in tatters. In 1999, an AIDS epidemic infected around 420 Libyan children, and the Libyans conveniently arrested the medical workers. The women were tortured in an effort to extract confessions.

International AIDS experts and a World Health Organization team that visited Libya concluded the AIDS virus was being spread by unsanitary hospital practices. The experts included Luc Montagnier, the doctor who discovered the AIDS virus and who was invited to Libya by Gadhafi's son, Seif El-Islam (a more modern man than his father). Montagnier found some of the children were infected before the nurses arrived.

So why were the nurses charged? Clearly Libyan officials were trying to deflect public outrage over the infecting of children.

That clears it up a little better than the first story.
