Nursing Home/Elderly care Question

A friend of mine picked up her father from his home in Tennessee yesterday to bring him to Maryland to live with her. She discovered when she got down there that her 80 year old father is in much worse shape than she was led to believe. He can hardly walk and is in need of medical care. She called me and asked me to do some research while she drives him back to where she lives in St. Mary's County. I have already gone to my church and gotten some supplies, like a walker and a cane for her. Are there organizations that have wheel chairs? If she is unable to care for him herself, are their nursing homes in St. Mary's that consider income?
TIA for any info

First stop should be with the St Mary's County Center for the Aging. They will be able to provide all sorts of information regarding resources for obtaining funds for care as well as information about all the options available. I'm in Chuck Co where they even have day care for the elderly, I'm sure St Mary's has some of the same.

Thanks, The Dept of aging lists 5 locations which are all Senior Centers. Her first stop this afternoon will be the Doctor, to have him checked out. She said he appears malnurished. Then we will check out the Leonardtown location for the dept of aging. :huggy:

She called and made the appointment while driving him home yesterday. I am going to meet her and help her get him there, just waiting for her call. She said that he couldn't even get out of the car to walk to the bathroom for breaks.

When the people called her and asked her to get him, they said he could drive, take care of himself and loved to work with tools in the shed. When she got down there, she found him in a bed, malnurished and unable to walk.

Still hoping to hear from someone that might know where we can get a wheelchair. I heard that American Legion has some. I called the one here in Lusby and they have one that is missing a seat.

I am planning on checking SMILE to see if they have one.

There is a federal aid program that assists in paying for nursing home care. It considers income and assets. I don't know if she would have to apply in Tennesee, since that's where he resided before being admitted to a nursing home, or if an application can be made in Maryland because that's where he'll be in a home and that's where his caretaker (daughter) lives. The Dept on Aging can probably answer that, if not, the aid is administered through the Department of Social Services, so they can answer the questions. In addition to income, they will consider any property Dad owns, if he has a house, they will place a lien on it. They will not force a sale of the house as long as he states he would like to return to it some day, even if that is a ridiculous expectation. If he never returns to his house, they may force the sale after he passes in order to recoup the cost of care.

Call "A Community That Shares" at 301-769-4199. They have wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, etc that they lend out for as long as the person needs them. Check to see what they have available.

Thanks. I called that number and left a message on their machine. We got him all settled into his room at her house, which was interesting... The only reason she is thinking of a nursing home is due to the shape he is in right now. He can't walk very well and he is SO thin. It appears that he was very neglected. I think when she bathes him she will find a mess of sores. She has never dealt with this, but she would like him to live with her. We thought a nursing home might give him the care he needs to get cleaned up, fed right, and easier transportation while we see what medical care he needs.

Anyway... Thanks everyone! :huggy:

Just a thought or 2-
I hope your friend knows her limitations-providing care for sick, obviously neglected family member-is a tremendous undertaking-BUT so rewarding. To give 1-on-1 comfort and care to a loved one is the least we can do for a family member, especially a father or mother.
I wish her and her family much luck with this-God bless her!
