According to Amazon, the cost per job for New York taxpayers is $48,000, compared to $22,000 for Virginia and $13,000 for Tennessee.

In a statement released by Amazon, Cuomo called the agreement "one of the largest, most competitive economic development investments in U.S. history."

New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson issued a statement saying: "Amazon is one of the richest companies in the world...I also don’t understand why a company as rich as Amazon would need nearly $2 billion in public money for its expansion plans at a time when New York desperately needs money for affordable housing, transportation, infrastructure and education."

Newly minted Democratic socialist congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez says New Yorkers are 'outraged' over Amazon tax break that could total $1.5 BILLION for hiring tens of thousands at new headquarters

  • Amazon has chosen two locations for its second headquarters, New York City and Northern Virginia
  • Retail giant is also making Nashville a new operations hub
  • Future congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez blasted Amazon.com and the New York City government on Tuesday
  • She 's angry about a tax-relief agreement that lured the giant e-tailer to the Big Apple
  • Ocasio-Cortez describes herself as a Democratic socialist
  • She said on Twitter that she's skeptical Amazon won't let its new New York staff unionize, and wants the company to hire people in the neighborhood

That's not even a lot of money in the grand scheme of economic development. What makes this so bizarre is the fact that these jobs are being relocated to NYC, not some depressed place like Rochester or Buffalo. NYS and VA are paying big bucks to Amazon to worsen the traffic and infrastructure situation in areas that are already not hurting for jobs.

New York City is where the big votes come in. They don't much care about places like Rochester and Buffalo.

Are you against this? I guess you are, you’re against hard working Americans finding jobs

Taxpayers should not have to foot the bill so a state can draw a huge company to put a HQ there. Especially, a huge company run by a socialist communist who treats his employees like slaves. Bezos is not your friend. All he wants is power. We stopped using Amazon quite a while back.

Oh, and it seems Bezos ignored cities that actually need jobs. But, he picks NY and N VA. Go figure. Guess what he is really up to.

But Gurps.... It's a giveaway to a "Leftist" billionaire.

That makes it a good thing! :bonk:

Power with Control
If the goal is to draw talent, in things like AI, web design, and other such skills, going to Rochester seems like a poor choice. As always with Bezos, it's about business. And this is twice in 24 hours I'm hearing the screenings of OCS, and thats far too many.

Amazon must have some pull. The big news last night was that Crystal City, Potomac Yards, and part of Pentagon City has been renamed "National Landing" for the new HQ.

You mean "could"? And I'm not sure if "back office" is the right description. There will be some of that, it's inherent in a headquarters, but there looks to a healthy portion of R&D and other such non- admin jobs...

I meant would. The decision to locate those non-HQ office farms at existing Amazon locations in VA and NY was made first. The circus with the great competition only served to blackmail those jurisdictions into making concessions and to benefit from the added attention to the brand.

So in plain English, is the government cutting Amazon a check or is Amazon not cutting the check to the government?

VA is cutting them an actual $22,000 check for each job created. NY mostly gives Amazon a tax abatement (Excelsior credit) which will be paid for with unrelenting high business taxes on small companies that are not tied into the statewide corruption racket.
