NYC Trip

Time for a nap
I'm making a quick weekend trip to NYC in mid-March and staying on the East Side near 49th/50th Streets. Note that I have NO IDEA where this is in relation to anything, as I've never been to NYC before.

For those of you that have been there, what are the places I shouldn't miss???

TIA!

If you're into wandering around, make sure you stop by China town for a few hours. Pretty cool to walk around and see different stuff. Also, make sure you eat in one of the Dim Sum restraunts- good food, interesting atmosphere. Note: That's how I learned to eat with chopsitcks, since you'll find zero silverware available.

If you smoke, bring cigs. You almost have to sell a kidney to afford to smoke there. A pack of smokes and a tiny-a** lighter cost me $8 about 2 years ago. I'd hate to see what they go for now.

#1 Tip: Take LOTS of money!!!!!!

Go to Saks just to say you've been there - Macy's is much better for real shopping. But you're going to be right next door to Saks, practically, so you should pop in just for fun.

Rockefeller Center is neat - lots of excellent stores.

Bundle up and do a carriage ride through Central Park, then stop at Tavern on the Green for a drink.

Skip the Vampire State Building - it's neat to do but the observation deck is VERY windy and it will be colder than hell so you won't enjoy it as much as you should, considering the price of admission.

See a show - you MUST! You're in New York! "Rent" was pretty good, "Phantom" drags a bit and "Chicago" was excellent. My daughter saw "Avenue Q" and said it was the best show she's ever seen. And next time I go up I want to see "Stomp" or "Mamma Mia".

Our two favorite restaurants in NYC are Heartland Brewery on 43rd between 6th and 7th, and Tony's DiNapoli right next door. But New York has a zillion fabulous restaurants so pretty much any place you walk into will be pretty good or they wouldn't be there anymore.

There's this bar down in Greenwich called Peculier's that has 6 bazillion different beers from all over the world. If you're a beer fan, get hammered there.

I  NY - can you tell?

ABSOLUTELY!!! Can you say $6 a pack????

And, Cty, nobody will stick a gun in your face. There are always so many people around, I'm amazed anyone manages to get mugged in Manhattan.

and better dressed :yay:

DC people wear nice clothes, but normally pretty conservative. Basic suits in blue and gray, with a "soft" look to them. Check out the NY people. Little more bold, different colors/stripes and generally have a little more "sheen" to the fabrics.

Cool! Guess I'd better start saving up...

A must is to go to - ground zero, your location said chelsea pier is only three miles, it is right down the street. You do not get the full view on TV, they are still taking down the condemed buildings. You can tell any cabbie where you want to go, we always took a cab when we stayed on Broadway.(can't remember the amount but I know it was less than $20 including tip) Regardless of what you hear, the taxi drivers we got were very friendly. Because of some of our cab drivers, they told us where stuff was and what not to miss, some pointed out flea markets and how to get a good deal.
NBC studios is right off rockafeller center, go early morning and wave at the people back home during the newscast. I have to agree with Vrai, I love it up there.
Beside where else can you get good deals on the street from the men in trenchcoats! Becareful of some of the stuff they sell, some of the knock offs or stolen goods are cheaper than ebay. But we have found out a secret, that my youngest taught us. When dealing with a street "merchant" and you are bartering with them and they don't seem to want to budge, have your partner say oh hurry is that the police? They will agree with what you want to pay and have you grab from them real quick. ex: sunglasses, he wanted $25. for two, after that ploy, we got 4 pr for 25.00!
Central park carriage ride is a must also, I believe Christo will still have his orange flags still up, not sure though. Enjoy and have fun, its a trip to watch and hear all the people, esp. the traffic with all the beeping horns!

Webster Hall....for strange and unusual.
The village..for the same, look out for the kids with the tic tac toe tattoos on their faces and the this one lingerie place(near the levi's place) that if you happen to wander to the back ,well, let's just say that you may be in for a shock!!
The planetarium..I love that place.
The Met, the Guggenhiem ...I have gotten lost in both places.(art lover)
