Oak/Wood Stair Treads

crabcake

But wait, there's more...
Anyone have wooden stair treads (without carpet) in their home? If so, is there anything you do to/put on them to keep them from being slippery?

I just discovered that my treads under the carpet are oak (the previous owner must've been smoking serious crack!) so I won't have to tear my stairs apart to replace them with new treads. I'll probably redo them myself, but am curious if there is any particular product (like a special stair poly?) that I should use to help minimize slippage.

TIA :yay:

When we first got our hardwood floors (which included the stairs) we slid all over the place and someone slipped on the stairs at least once a day. I don't know if the finish just got worn a bit or we just learned to walk without falling down, but this isn't a problem anymore. Even the cats don't skitter so much.

I don't know if it's "special" but all we have on our treads is poly. They are still a little slippery but not so much that we need airbags at the bottom of the stairs. :lmao:

Just don't let my wifey near them, she'd wax the crap out of 'em.
As long as you don't run around in your socks you should be ok.

I'm looking forward to seeing the dogs chase the cat down 'em when they're done.

Thanks ... I plan to poly post-stain ... but wasn't sure if there was some sort of special slip-minimizing poly.

We don't typically wear shoes in the house, and opt for socks/slippers since most of the house has hardwood. Perhaps we'll all be getting new slipper Crocs to wear. I find that when I wear those around the hardwood floors, I NEVER slip/slide anywhere. :yay:

We've actually never had any problems with our stair treads. I think they might have made them a little rougher than the rest of the flooring though. I figured fat Pal would have all kinds of problems but he does really well. I think it's the weight that holds him stable on the stairs. :lmao:

Did you do oak or pine treads, or bamboo?

Please be careful with your dog.
We use to let all the pups sleep in the our bedroom upstairs, until the older Lab slipped on the stairs coming down in the morning.
After that accident, she would go up the stairs but wouldn't come down. I actually had to pick her up and carry her down the stairs.
Had to put up a baby gate to keep them down on the main floor.
Hated to do it, but more concerned for their safety.

Have you used it? Is it a repeat application product (where every time I clean/polish, I have to reapply?

The pictures of ceramic/stone with it applied look really pretty! :yay:
For an easy and cheap floor cleaning alternative try mixing 1/2 cup of white vinegar to 1 gallon of warm water. This method of using vinegar to clean hardwood floors is an easy and safe solution to keeping your floor looking it's best. Be cautious what you put on your wood surface as oils or furniture polish can make a floor very slippery.

Still looking....

I don't want my house smelling like vinegar, though. :peeyew: I use PB (Parabond) hardwood floor cleaner and polisher. It works great, and the floors downstairs aren't typically too terribly slippery. I'm just curious if there's something else for the stairs that I should consider before I strip 'em. :yay:

Thanks much for your effort!

Everything I've been reading say to use only cleaners/polishes designed for hardwood floors and nothing more. It also say wear shoes. I guess this is one of the drawbacks to hardwood. Good luck.

Second time, Wife told the idiot (Stud) to take his socks off.

It's great to be married.
