Of Blood and Water...

1 John 5:1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
The commentary I use is from the Blue Letter Bible Study Online. It's really heavy this morning. I really think you should read the commentary for yourself. I intend to discuss what these verses mean to me... which is probably not what your preacher, or David Guzik, would say... but hey I'm just an old ignorant woman reading the Bible and writing my opinion of what I think it says. I'm too ignorant to lead, so please... go to the Commentary.

There's a lot of confusion about the water and the blood. The commentaries want to make it stand for the Baptismal water and the Blood that was drawn by that horrible beating He took. They want to make it about the water and blood that gushed out of His body when they ran a sword through Him to make sure He was dead on the Cross.

Some even talk about some writing in the margin of one of the Bibles that adds verses... so, some can call the whole Bible a fake.

Look at verse 9. It says we accept the Testimony of humans but shun God's Testimony [the Bible]. Back in the days of Jesus, it took three Witnesses to convict a man. They had a horrible time finding three humans who would speak poorly or against Jesus. They had to taint the Testimony they were given and twist it to make it fit a crime worthy of the Cross. But they didn't Believe what Jesus said. Today they call the whole Bible a fake because of some notes in the margins of the old manuscripts. How rude!

The human body is full of water and blood. Together the water and the blood supply the rest of the human tissue with oxygen, keeping it alive. AND... Amniotic fluid is called water! He was born of a woman even though He is God's Son.... from Water. He was beaten... that beating was made worse because Peter pissed off the Roman Soldiers by cutting off an ear, which Jesus healed in the middle of being arrested.... and blood was oozing as He went up the Skull to be hung.

Jesus was also made of water and blood. He became human. He is God's Son. He didn't have to do it... but He became human for us.

So, even though it's really hard to wrap our minds around it... it is Biblical that Jesus was made up of water and blood just like the other humans. He suffered the same pain. He knows all the emotions we go through. He understands why humans do what humans do. He went through it all... as a human.

Jesus was made of the same stuff we are made of. He was human. He understands.

We have no defense based on "you wouldn't understand what it's like to be human".

Jesus was human, made of water and blood, and He endured it all.

Of Blood and Water...
