Matthew 5:33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
Now... when I was growing up.... these verses were used to keep people from cussing. I'm a sailor's kid.... I can cuss a streak.... and young ladies just aren't supposed to cuss.... so they told us "Jesus said don't cuss..... It's in the same sermon as the Lord's Prayer".Actually.... it's about keeping your word.... not cussing. It's about all those times people say "Oh I'll do it... I swear I'll get it done."
"Oh I swear"..... that's like saying "trust me"..... "you can bank on it" and then walking off and forgetting all about it.
A few days ago.... Hubby won an annual pass to the National Parks. We already have one.... ours is not annual... it's a lifetime pass.... so we didn't need this pass and Hubby decided to sell it. He posted it on Marketplace and the facebook page for our local community.
One of the ladies in our community.... has been talking about taking kayaks to the river and making a picnic day of it. Quite a few ladies in this community own inflatable kayaks and they are always talking about going out together. The pass is one step to the picnic day. So that lady told Hubby "I'll buy your pass, only I have to get a check cashed." Hubby said he would take the pass off of Marketplace if she was going to buy it.
"Oh I'll be back this afternoon"... "Oh.... you can take it off Marketplace.... I'll be back this afternoon" .... wait for it.... "Oh I swear!"
So.... Hubby took it off of Marketplace.... and you guessed it.... she hasn't been back.
Problem is... now she doesn't want to be seen.... because she didn't keep her word. Now it's likely to cause her grief. I hope she doesn't think we need the money to survive or something.... then she'll be in more grief..... just because she swore she would do it.... and didn't.
Jesus said "Don't swear!" Oh and my mom would say.... "Don't cuss!"
