Here's the deal. I'm eighteen, male, and got caught going 65 in a 55. Jack ass move on my part, but that aside. I'm in Charles County and really can't afford to get a point on my license. Now, I intend on going to court, pleading guilty, and doing my assigned amount of community service. What I need to know is this; once I send in the papers, checking the box that says I admit to the appointed crime, will they send the information to my insurance company before the court date?

If this is the case, and I wind up having a point on my license while waiting for the court date, I'd rather just pay the fine. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

What state where you in when you got the ticket was it in MD because if it was in VA points don't transfer. Are you off of your provisional yet? If you are still on Provisionals it is a little strict when it comes to the lic. The first moving violation will result in having to take drivers improvement. Once you pay the ticket it admits guilt and your record will reflect the point. As far as insurance goes it all depends on when they check your record. That could be anytime but mainly they check the record when you renew your policy. I hope this helps

You did the crime now pay the fine. Just watch your speed for now on.

I drive 5 miles below the speed limit at all times. Haven't been pulled over in 15 Years! With the price of gas, insurance and owning a car it's just not worth it to speed.

This isn't my first post, but I guess I can post here anyway.

I had tickets in MD where I paid the fine and admitted guilt, had points and my insurance rate never changed.

If you are that worried about it, go to court, chances are pretty good that you can do community service to avoid getting points on your DL all together.

Don't check the box and send it in. Do call the State's Attorney and ask about community service. If you do the community service, the put the charge on the "stet docket" and you don't get a conviction.

You need to go to the States Attorney's office since you have to pay the $25 to sign up for Community Service. And yes the rest what MMDad said about going on stet, is correct.

OK, first off, I just want to know if the officer reduced your speed to 65 in a 55 or if you were actually caught going 65 in a 55? I'm just asking because I know some police officers do this (they still write down your actual speed so don't pretend like you were only going 65 in a 55 in court if you were going 75!)

I had a similar ticket a few years ago and also pled guilty. I received a PBJ (probationary before judgment) which they never reported to my insurance company. To get this I did community service and paid a reduced fine. As a general rule, you're not going to have anything reported to your insurance company until after your court date.

Generally I'm a little iffy about PBJs in certain situations, but I understand from my own experience that it is easy to hit 65 in a 55, especially when people are flying past you! If this is your first ticket you'll probably be cut some slack. Now don't do it again!

Odd, I've never heard of that! Then again I've only had the one time experience.I was told that I had to go to court to find out if I even had the option of getting community service a few years ago, but maybe it changed.

It's true. Both my kids have done it. But you have to go to the States Attorney Office with ticket in hand and $25.

My son has done it twice.

They do reduce the ticket to the reduce the points. I'm sure bad drivers don't get this luxury of reducing the ticket nor community service.

Go to states attorney's office first assuming that you got the ticket in Md. I have played that card before. defienetly worth a Saturday for 8 hours of supporting whatever they assign you or you pick. I picked supporting some fair at Thomas Stone High School. No points for me. This is also assuming you have a clean driving record.

Of course being 18 and with the rash of teen wrecks lately they may teach you a lesson by throwing the whole traffic law library at you just to make a point! :lmao:

Maybe I'm missing something.

But I wouldn't sign or pay anthing until I go to court. I would say wait for your court notice and plead guilty in front of the judge. If this is your first offense they will generally give your PBJ and you pay court cost plus fine and do some community service. Genrally 1 point means a 8 hour day of community service.

If you pay the fine and sign prior to a court date you are accepting the fine and the point.

I would say go to court if this your first offense! The point will cost you more in the long run!

Okay, you sound like you have some remorse and admitted it a bad on your part. Please don't think I'm being too harsh with my thoughts and suggestion. Admit your guilt, pay up, take the point(s) if they award it, learn from it, and go from there. Your mistake this time could have taken someone's life. Your next one may. You're eighteen now.

Yes you are lost! You take the ticket to the States Attorney's office even before you get a court date. They wave the fine and points, give you community service, you pay $25 and do your duty.

Tell DukesDad hey for me when you see him. :smack:

Go to the States Attorney's office and explain your dilemma. : They sometimes give Community service and place the ticket on the Stet docket. If you stay straight for a year its dropped and no points.

Paying up and taking your medicine may sound like a good thing, but it really isnt ,if you dont have to do it. Points stay with you for waaay too long and they will raise your insurance. Why go thru it if you can do Community service and avoid it.

The worst community service isnt as bad as a suspended license or points on that license.

Yeah, here's the deal. I do feel bad about it and all, but coming up into hughesville, on a straight road, in the middle of the day with barely anyone around...65 isn't that bad. I get passed by God knows how many people while I'm going 65.

For the record, I was going 65. I got jacked because it was the end of the month, genius move on my part.

Thanks, this has all been pretty helpful. I do live in Maryland, and was caught speeding in Maryland. Charles County to be specific.

So here's what I'm thinking so far, go to the state attorneys office, bring my ticket, see what I can get 'em to do. I'll bring the $25 with me.

I went to the La Plata court house and asked the people in the community service department about it. They said I had to wait for a court hearing, where I'd get my community service.

So confusing. I figure it can't hurt to pay the state attorney's office a visit though.

I had a PBJ. All I had to do was make a donation to Project Graduation. No fine, fees or points. But I was in calvert.
