Omega 3

So I'm approaching 50 and trying to get as far ahead of the game of staying healthy as I can. One of the most confusing things to me is this Omega 3 supplement thing. Trying to figure out and find the best supplement. I know you want supplements to have high levels of DHA and then EPA. I remember hearing or reading that you want about 120 mg of DHA per day. I can't find any Omega 3 pill anywhere that provides that; which means you have to take 2 - 3 pills a day; and these things aren't cheap. Then you have to watch out for contaminants like mercury and PCBs since not all makers try to remove these things.

Any recommendations?

I recommend you watch out for Fish-burps. They can get kinda nasty.

Also, never stick your nose into a bottle of omega-3 pills/tablets/gels and take a big sniff. You will come very close to passing out.

Here's where I get mine. Best prices around and loaded with EPA & DHA.

Here is the nutritional info. Look at the EPA & DHA. Compare that to other brands. This is the best value I've found.

I take a Omega 3-6-9 complex from Natrol.

Do your research and get the most O-3 for your buck. Some will have too many fillers added to benefit your system, so check the ingredient list to see the actual amount of O-3 per dosage (good web sites will let you view it). Try to stay away from products that use soy oil as a filler (soy is prevalent in a lot of foods and too much mimics estrogen. It interferes with my medication too). And if it has flax oil but isn't in a black bottle - don't buy it.
Here's what it did for me - my cholesterol & blood pressure reduced. I get most of mine from fresh ground flax seed and foods I eat. I supplement with this but you find whats best for you.

This is a great write-up... Omega-3 fatty acids

I don't keep my fish and krill oils refridgerated...:eyebrow:

Available Forms:
Both EPA and DHA can be taken in the form of fish oil capsules. Flaxseed, flaxseed oil, fish and krill oils should be kept refrigerated. Whole flaxseeds must be ground within 24 hours of use, so the ingredients stay active. Flaxseeds are also available in ground form in a special mylar package so that the components in the flaxseeds stay active.

Be sure to buy omega-3 fatty acid supplements made by established companies who certify that their products are free of heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium.

How to Take It:
Dosing for fish oil supplements should be based on the amount of EPA and DHA, not on the total amount of fish oil. Supplements vary in the amounts and ratios of EPA and DHA. A common amount of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil capsules is 0.18 grams (180 mg) of EPA and 0.12 grams (120 mg) of DHA. Five grams of fish oil contains approximately 0.17 - 0.56 grams (170 -560 mg) of EPA and 0.072 - 0.31 grams (72 - 310 mg) of DHA. Different types of fish contain variable amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, and different types of nuts or oil contain variable amounts of LNA. Fish oils contain approximately 9 calories per gram of oil.

From what I understand if you are burping up the fishy taste, the pills are no good.
