.. but I guess the rest of the Harley 'fleet' will now enjoy some good German engineering

Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG - News) today announced that it has completed the acquisition of the motorcycle division of auto maker BMW. Jim Ziemer, President and CEO, and Tom Bergmann, Vice President and CFO, Harley-Davidson, Inc. expressed their satisfaction in acquiring the brand that has recently experienced a slow down in growth.

In discussing the acquisition, Jim Ziemer related that while BMW produced well built motorcycles, the average consumer thought BMW only made automobiles. "After peeking around on some forums on the World Wide Web, I noticed a disturbing trend that even owners of BMW automobiles didn't realize the heritage of BMW. So I got thinking 'Now that is funny!' and began to seriously consider my options."

Motorcycles will continue to be built under the BMW brand name until a marketing company is found that can come to terms with the diverse offering that the BMW brand brings to the table.

Harley-Davidson, Inc. is the parent company for the group of companies doing business as Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Buell Motorcycle Company and Harley-Davidson Financial Services. Harley-Davidson Motor Company, the only major U.S.-based motorcycle manufacturer, produces heavyweight motorcycles and offers a complete line of motorcycle parts, accessories, apparel, and general merchandise. Buell Motorcycle Company produces sport motorcycles. Harley-Davidson Financial Services provides wholesale and retail financing and insurance programs to Harley-Davidson dealers and customers.

Now that you drive a hog, are you going to step it up a bit? You were driving pretty slow this morning.

On Webster Field, or did you see me earlier some where? Not that there's many places you can see me on my 6 mile commute!

Rare that I go slow, but this morning was really enjoying the ride.

That and I just gave the bike it's annual cleaning...

I hope this doesn't mean I have to go buy loud obnoxious pipes.. days like this I REALLY like the quiet ride.

Does this mean that you can drive to the HD dealer outside of Waldorf for replacement parts? Accessories? And can your HD bretheren gift Bubba HD attire and the like? OH! And, you can change your avatar to a cropped pic of a BMW bike with the wording, "BMW, the best HD can buy"

Wow. And all because of poor marketing. Well, that is one thing that Harley does do well. It'll be interesting to see how they step it up for BMW. BMW has come out with quite a few interesting models in the last couple of years, but if you weren't looking for them, you'd never know that they were available.

And itsbob. Bring your BMW over to my house, I'll save you some money on loud pipes. I've got a cordless drill with your name all over it.

 Mine hasn't ever leaked in the nearly 10 years that I have owned it.

IT MIGHT mean that BMW will finally get rid of that old chain, and go with a maintenance free, oil free, slop free lifetime belt. :yay:

What chain??

Most of the beemers have been shaft since 1923..

The little 650 is chain OR belt, depending on the model, and I THINK the new 800 is belt drive

The GS's are chain, aren't they? Hmm...seems like every BMW I see has a chain. But then...I never see all that many.

Nope, shaft.

Unless the GS you see are the 650GS chain gangers. I THINK the F650GS are the only chain drive, and the other F650 models are belt, as are the new F800's

All the current model 1150, 1200, K and R bikes are shaft. Maintenance free on the new ones (2005 and on) to 100K..

OOPPS new model this year.. the G650X Chain Drive.

:yay: I learned something. Don't tell anyone though. It'll just lead to another arguement. It's been said that it couldn't be done.
