(ELLICOTT CITY, MD) — Maryland State Police are continuing their investigation into a wrong way crash on I-70 in Howard County early this morning that killed one driver.
The identity of the victim is being withheld, pending next of kin notification. The victim was driving a 2003 Jaguar. He was the driver and sole occupant of a 2003 Jaguar. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second driver is identified as Ali Bashir, 31, of Columbus, OH. He was the driver and sole occupant of a 2019 International truck tractor. He was transported to Howard County General Hospital by ambulance.
The third driver is identified as Edward Baumgardner, 69, of Thurmont, MD. He was the driver and sole occupant of a 2017 Mack truck tractor. He was transported to Howard County General Hospital by ambulance.
According to the preliminary investigation, Maryland State Police at the Waterloo Barrack received a 9-1-1 call just before 2:30 a.m. today reporting a vehicle traveling the wrong way on eastbound I-70 in the area of MD Rt.40, mile marker 82. Moments later, another call was received reporting a crash eastbound I-70. Callers advised the vehicle was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70.
Troopers responded and found three vehicles were involved in the crash. The preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle driven by the victim was traveling the wrong way on eastbound Interstate 70 and struck the oncoming vehicle head-on driven by Bashir. The victim’s vehicle became disabled in the eastbound lanes. A second collision then occurred involving Baumgardner. It is unknown at this time where the victim entered Interstate 70 headed in the wrong direction.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team responded and will be conducting a detailed crash reconstruction report. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration, along with Howard County EMS personnel and officers from the Howard County Police Department are on-scene and assisting with lane closures and detours around the scene. Due to the incident, two lanes are still currently closed at the time of this writing.
