John 18:15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard, 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.
He replied, “I am not.”
18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
Jesus told Peter that Peter would deny Jesus three times before dawn. It's Thursday Night.... people are standing by the fire in the courtyard outside Annas' place. Jesus had been arrested. The disciples have already scattered, rather than be arrested with Him. Peter, who cut the ear off one of the guards, and John, who calls himself "another disciple" in this scripture, have followed Jesus as far as they could. John used some ties he had to the high priest to get them into the courtyard outside.

Peter, the cowardly lion, who attacked the guard from behind, was still free. I bet he was skulking behind John. Like a little dog with sharp teeth but all bark, afraid to use those teeth. Peter was warming by the fire with the other spectators. He was hiding in plain sight. I bet John might have even taken Peter to the fire, and said "stay here... I'll be back... don't talk to anyone". I wonder if Peter still had blood on him from the soldier's ear. Did Peter try to rub it away? Or did he pull his sleeves down to try to hide it? Was he shaking?

I wonder if a nudge occurred in his chest when he denied being a follower of Jesus. I wonder if Peter got one of those chills down his spine. Most people get those when fear steps in. Peter assaulted a Roman Guard. I bet he was quaking in his sandals.

This is the first denial.... it's still dark. The rooster hasn't crowed, dawn hasn't broken. It's still Thursday.

Peter the cowardly liar has just denied Jesus. I wonder... did Jesus hear him? Jesus can read minds... did Jesus "hear" the denial?

One down... two to go.
