Another phone charge scam is being worked. The phone rings once and then disconnects. the number appears to be domestic (US) however, it actually routes through an international number that adds high charges - for example, $20 at call connection and per minute fees.

Okay, so help me understand. Why do people call a number back that they did not answer in the first place and the caller did not leave a voicemail? If it is important when I call you, and you don't answer, I will leave a voicemail for you. Don't call me back just because you see my number pop up on your phone or CID. I probably don't want to talk to you now because it is inconvenient for me. So I don't feel sorry for those people who call that number back and get charged $20. SMH

People call back all the time. I work in a hotel and EVERY night, someone calls and says "who called me?" When I say I don't know, they get angry and demand I call ALL THE ROOMS to find out who called. I refuse. I have asked a few why they didn't answer and they say "I didn't recognize the number."

Rule at our house, if we don't recognize the number we don't answer it, if they leave a vm we will listen to it and if it is someone we know we will call them back, if they don't leave a vm, no call back.

You can google any number and get basic info like city, state, carrier etc. If it is a bill collector, telemarketer, or other business usually you will find that info as well. Some numbers even have dedicated threads with replies from numerous people about what they want etc.

I will usually not call back a number, however I will answer most I do not recognize and have never had an issue.

No land line, but that is exactly what I do with my cell phone.

I would think it has more to do with curiosity. While I am hesitant to answer some unknown numbers, I will usually answer them. However calling them back without first doing a search online is another story.

I have had friends and family call me with unusual numbers (usually out of state at the time). If they want to hang up when I answer then they can call me back and leave a voice mail.
