(TANEYTOWN, MD) – One suspect is in custody and police are continuing their search for a second suspect wanted in connection with an early morning home invasion and shooting of a teenager in Carroll County.
Charges are pending against the suspect in custody, so he is not being identified at this time. The second suspect being sought is described only at this time as an African American male with a stocky build.
The victim is a 16-year-old male who lives at the location where the shooting occurred. He was taken by ambulance to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where medical staff report he is in stable condition.
Shortly before 2:00 a.m. today, officers from the Taneytown Police Department responded to a call for a shooting in a multi-family apartment building in the unit-block of E. Baltimore Street, Taneytown. When officers arrived at the apartment, they found the victim, who had sustained what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
Taneytown Police Chief Jason Etzler requested Maryland State Police conduct the investigation. Troopers from the Criminal Enforcement Division responded and are continuing the investigation. They are being assisted by State Police crime scene technicians and officers from the Taneytown Police Department.
The preliminary investigation indicates two suspects forced their way into the apartment shortly before 2:00 a.m. today. The suspects, both described as being armed with handguns, confronted the victim’s father and a young child. They demanded to see the victim and one suspect struck the father in the head with a gun. The suspects forced their way into a bedroom where they confronted the victim. An altercation ensued and the victim was shot. Both suspects then fled the scene. Neither the child nor a fourth person in the home was injured. The father declined treatment for his injury.
Information regarding the identity of one of the suspects was developed and troopers went to his home, which is near the shooting scene. The suspect surrendered without incident and was taken into custody.
Troopers and crime scene technicians remain on the scene. No firearms have been recovered at this time.
A motive has not been identified. The investigation is continuing.
